HD-DVD might be dead, but blu-ray will isn't going to win.
I will not pay $400 for a blu-ray player. EVER. I will not pay $30 per movie for a blu-ray movie. EVER. I have a feeling a lot of people feel this way.
I will stick with SD-DVD until it dies.

OK...so it won't win because you say so?

Blu-Ray has won the format war. But it hasn't won the standard war against SD-DVD. I wouldn't even expect it to take over for another 10 years lol. By that time something better will debut.
My next purchase will be a Blu-ray player :D My HD-DVD player will still be right next to it though :)
I don't give a crap about who wins. I'm still using standard DVD. I've had PS3 for a year but I haven't bought any blu-ray video title.

I dont see how this is any different to the change from VHS-DVD, hardware and software prices eventually fall...
All I want is bargain bin HD DVD's. I am sure down the road there will be software to convert HD DVD's over to a blu-ray disk.

Blu-ray isn't going away anytime soon. In Feb 2009, everyone should or will have HDTV and sales of Blu-ray players/movies will increase a lot more, and with help of PS3 and maybe Blu-ray addon for X360. The prices will drop as time goes by when production becomes cheaper on players/discs.

you can do that now ;)
all you need is
AnyDVD HD
EVOdemux - freeware
TSremux - freewaer
and then bd burner,
pfft, dont care about BD atm.
upconverted DVD ftw. i mean hell, i already have 100 DVD's.
This thread is telling. So some of you don't even have hi-def movie player yet jump in threads disputing quality and choosing favorite format? All while still on DVD? Ridiculous. Evilchris was real good. What posers. Yeah stick to your DVDs.:rofl

Ummmm... Excuse me for asking. But I thought BluRay was in "war" against HD-DVD? HD-DVD is dead.... doesn't that mean Blu-Ray won? Maybe I'm missing something here....
And talking about "future" formats is pretty rediculous. Thats like saying the NES console did not "win" because many many years later another console started selling more.
BluRay won. Get over it. I have.
Blurray has won. They just haven't dropped pricing yet.
When manufacturers ramp up the capacity to build more units, they will inevitably lower the pricing accordingly.
Remember when DVD players were $300+? Now you can get a brand new upconvert model for $50. I'd estimate that within a year you will see decent Blurray players hovering around the $200 mark.

While I agree prices will drop, with a greedy company like Sony overheading it all, prices will drop alot slower than DVD prices did. Sony is going to milk out as much profits possible.
I did not want BluRay to win, but it is what it is unfortunately.

At the end of the day its not only Sony producing Blu-ray players. There is a lot of competition to drive down prices. Just look at the LCD market where Samsung routinely undersells Sony though they jointly use of the same technology. Prices will drop so people need to let go of this idea it wont just like they need to let go of the idea HD DVD will somehow make a comeback.

I think there is another point no one has made. All content will be digital in the near future anyways, so it doesn't really matter.

this is one of the reasons i was not in support of BD. i dont trust Sony owning the rights on a market.
kudos to them though. this will drive PS3 sales. hell, maybe ill get one this summer. even if i dont buy any games, i can still install linux and play BD's lol.
will look good on my 42" Hitachi i just got. :D

blu-ray players will be cheap and they're not all made by sony. rumors that tohisba might be already in production on blu-ray player for 3rd quarter of 2008 after they get rid of all hd dvd players.

SONY DOES NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO BLU-RAY. THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE FORMAT. THEY ARE ONLY THE MOST VOCAL MEMBER OF THE BLU-RAY DISC ASSOCIATION.

Yeah, Amazon.com has been great with HD movies lately especially with awesome BOGO sales. Soon, they'll drop in price just like with DVDs.
I never ever buy Blu-ray movies over $25, so I don't agree when people say they're over $30 otherwise they're buying from wrong store or something. ;)
