Which AntiVirus is easier on the system? Norton, McAfee, etc.

If you use the auto-protection feature of any of them, they're all bad.
So, the lesson is, be careful, don't use Outlook, don't use IE, and don't grab warez. ;)
The only virii I've ever had on my box was when somebody in my family who shall remain nameless (*cough brother cough*) managed to get some bad mojo off of Kazaa. Then I turned off Kazaa for him, turned off drive sharing on my box, and I've been flawless.

The best Anti-Virus is: DONT OPEN STRANGE FILES THAT YOU CANT IDENTIFY!!!!!!!!!
Ive been all over the net, warez, roms, cracks, p2p... the worst of it, and ive NEVER had a virus on any computer at my house (we're talking 6 years online). Ive used an anti-virus program maybe twice in 5 years and they both came up clean.
Im serious when I say this: the best anti-virus is safe surfing\downloading. Dont open strange email attachments. And dont open anything that people send you that you arent expecting.
Not trying to troll... just trying to give helpfull advice.

Well, I can tell you that I like Norton a lot better than McAfee in that respect. We have McAfee at work and I basically can't do anything when that goofy thing is running. I use Norton at home and I don't have any performance issues with it (except I always disable it when I am getting a bunch of files out of Sourcesafe otherwise it goes too slow).

I like AVG .. free.. competent in what it needs to do. ... oh yeah did I mention free? :D but yeah I use it on top of cautious downloading. My brother trusts his own judgement so i don't install anything for him.. I trust him too .. he knows what ot open and what not to open .. my mom's computer on the other hand ..could use antivirus as there are more than one person using the thing . [dang i build my younger sis and that's what I get? < thinks about yanking out the two 128s to reclaim the ram that was sacrificd :p>]

I use NAV and I find no slowdowns. And I have a humble P3 800EB with 256 Mb PC133.
Even if you take care and don't execute unknown files, there's always a chance, you may distract sometime, you may open an e-mail with virus, or a friend's exe that you need but he doesn't know it's infected...
Not having antivirus is like not having insurance, but taking much care of not being robbed and not having any fires. :p
i cant stand antivirus programs...
im gonna go with the captin on this one..hehe i dont use one, just be careful what you download. download only from reputable sources.
and stay away from small .exe files:)

Use Phoenix, it's faster, smaller, and open-source.

is phoenix a spin off of mozilla or something completely different ?

Phoenix has replaced Mozilla as the open-source browser. It's built on Mozilla code, it's just uberly-streamlined. No installer, even--just extract the zip file and run it. Good Stuph.

There was one real security hole in Mozilla.
And it was fixed in... uhh... like 23 minutes.

that is the beauty of open source I think you got guys that are committed to a good product and not just committed to sucking the cash out of the user

One thing to consider... Mcafee used to do this and I think Norton still does. You can hit their website and do an online, real time scan of your machine via their website. That way you don't have to buy or install any extra software.
Anyone know if you can still do this? I think I saw it on Norton's site still.

used to do it with Mcafee, eh, I don't think they do it anymore tho, you just download this little ap that does nothing:D

It's a fantastic browser. 0.6 rocks my socks off.
I really have no complaints about Norton on my system, everything seems to run plenty fast. Not sure why some people have problems? And I only have an AXP1700 with DDR266
