Well, I'm thinking my LXI's are getting ready to give up the ghost. They just aren't sounding as good as they used to, and are distorting even in the ranges they're designed to handle. They're great speakers, only pair I've ever heard that sounded better are my two tower Curtis Mathes. Those rock like you're front row at a concert if you're listening to music, and front row like you're in a theater if you're watching a movie. But I've modified those while my LXI's remain stock. Here's my LXI's... yes they're old, but they did the job and did it with excellence. :D

So... what I'm wanting is another set of tower speakers. I'm wanting the best "bang-for-buck" speakers. I'm not looking to spend $1600 just for two speakers. I could do $250, maybe $300 for the pair plus tax. What I'm needing to know is:

1.)What are some good places to purchase from on-line, like a "Newegg.com" but only for good quality speakers at a realistic price?

2.)And then some recommendations as to what speakers would do good for the price.

Size isn't an issue, as it they can't be too big. :p The two towers I already have stand about 4' tall and probably weigh a good 80lbs each, atleast.

Thanks ya'll. :D

So nobody has any input? All you A/V enthusiasts here, where do you purchase your gear? Is what I'm seeking not in existance?

I've been browsing deal-time, and I'm seeing a bunch of speakers that seem decent, and within my price range, just not sure about the actual stores themselves. I suppose if they're listed on Dealtime then they're pretty reliable places to purchase from. Just rather here some feedback from actual customers that I trust (hence, fellow forum members here) if possible.

Check out www.av123.com . Specifically the Onix Rocket RS760 tower:

Unbeatable for the price. Hm, but for your price range, maybe the 250's?

You can put them on stands for tower listening height....

Um, thanks- but that is *way* out of my price range. I need a *pair* for *no more* than $300 dollars. I guess, by many folks standard those will be the "bottom of the barrel" speakers, but I'm just neading a recommendation as to which would be the best set to get for that price range.

No way I can afford near $1200 for just one speaker. That's $2400 for a pair... sure they sound devine, just not within my budget.

Thank you, though. :D

It's not easy to give people advice regarding speakers. Also, remember speakers are regional good. I don't know any american speaker label. I could recommend you brands like Teufel, Quadral or Nubert ( www.quadral.com, www.nubert.de and www.teufel.de) but these don't even seem to be sold in the US.

The only advice I can give is to listen to the speakers you will buy. Isn't there some HiFI shop "Atop a horse, with [your] rifle, on some lone mountain range..."?

There are some local shops here, but they're super expensive. For a pair that sound comparable to the two towers I already have... I'm looking at like $400 atleast for a single speaker. I guess I could head by those shops again and have a quick peek, it has been a while...

If you absolutely don't *have* to have towers, you could try these (http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_32&products_id=65). I have not heard them firsthand, but I'm very interested in them myself.

They have a tower version (http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_32&products_id=67) as well, but they're more than you want to spend.

Here's a thread on them at AVSForum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=900045)...

Here's an article (http://www.soundadviceblog.com/?p=787) about them...

EDIT: Hmmm...sorry...the Acculines are geared more toward HT, not simply music towers. But several have commented in the AVS thread regarding their music performance (with a sub, of course), so they may work well for that, too. You may have difficulty finding quality towers in your pricerange, I'm afraid...

And I see that they've come out with a revised A1, the A1R (http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_32&products_id=114). From one of the Audio Insider guys (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13036577&postcount=180): The original A1 was designed for double-duty as a bookshelf, effects-channel, and accessory speaker, and therefore not entirely as a front main speaker. The thinking was that the Acculine A2 and A3 would dominate the choices for front main channels.

As it turns out, the A1 has been requested for main speakers as well.

In January BG cooperated with our sense that we should also tune an alternative A1 -- the A1 Revised -- to fill demand for a compact Acculine stand monitor. The A1R therefore simply provides added diffraction step compensation -- provides more relative midbass energy -- for free-air installations that don't have the benefit of a closer back wall to otherwise assist the power response.

In short, the A1R is voiced fuller below the crossover point and therefore has a spectrally flatter response when used on stands.

Thank you for the input... but if possible I'd really like to stick with Tower speakers. Honestly, I'd prefer a box with an 8" woofer (no preference as to whether it'd be passive or active, if passive that dual 6 1/2" active woofers would be prefered)... dual 6's would work I suppose. I don't need 'em to be perfect, just decent. I don't want 'em to blow if I turn it a quarter the way up, or crackle, or distort at higher volumes. My reciever is only 100watts x 5 at 8 ohms... so I don't need them to handle a ton of power either.

Here's a comparison shot of my current towers to my LXIs so you can see the difference. Pay close attention to the X-Blade tower on the right. Notice how it stands about half the height of the LXI's, then notice it compared to the Towers:

Towers:

LXI's:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y225/Sir_Farts_A_Lot/Audio%20Related/LXIs/LXI003.jpg

Heck, if anybody knows of a good place (other than Craigslist) to get decent refurbished or second hand speakers I'm open for that. You know, like a Salvation Army but for speakers. :p

Thank you all for the input... I've been eyeballing Dealtime, Newegg, and the local Craigslist listings. So far not much I'm interested in...

Get some used speakers like a set of Bose 10.2 Series 2.

For example.

Very cheap and they should last forever. Mine are already 19 years old and they sound great. Teak veneer too! Very slick...

So the Bose marketing still sounds good even after 19 years? Wow, you are one hell of a customer.

Thank you for the input though. I have been browsing Craigslist a lot, and even found these locally:

Closest thing to what I'm after. Though, honestly, the ones I linked to in my previous post look soooo much hotter. :wonder: Don't know why, but I have a "thing" for older, vintage speakers like that. :o

1990 is pretty vintage these days... but hey just saying I like my 10.2s and they can drink up a bunch of wattage. (400 RMS if I can remember correctly.) and they have a nice horizontally mounted driver in the bottom compartment for the vented sub. Gives pretty good thump for movies and games.
