i don't think this changes much. The only "cheap" BluRay player is still the $400 PS3. It's not like the masses are now gonna flock and buy Blu-Ray players and movies.

It is dead, and with it the days of the discounted blu-ray players, the five or seven free blu-ray dvd's with a purchase, etc. It is going to be interesting to see in the future how quickly the market adopts blu-ray in the future.
Has the BD org stopped creating new non-backward compatible specifications yet? Or is this like the Superbowl, where we have a new one each year?

Wow, didn't expect it that soon. I'm have to say I'm pretty much excited. Now, I'm waiting to hear from Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks on this.

Toshiba to announce HD-DVD defeated as early as next week and the decision to ceased HD-DVD players production plus cancelled future HD-DVD developments like 51GB HD-DVD triple layer disc that will never see the light of day . Universal, Dreamworks and Paramount are expected to make announcements switch to Blu-ray within weeks.
Look like all Hollywood studios will have 100% Blu-ray supported by June 2008.

Shares in Toshiba Corp, which a company source said was planning to axe its HD DVD format, jumped nearly 6 percent as analysts praised a move to cut its losses, while Sony Corp shares rose 1 percent.
The share price of Toshiba went up nearly 6% for loosing, while Sony only went up 1% for winning. I don't think I'll ever understand how the stock market works.
