it took me 5 minutes to bring up X on a 2.4.20-9smp

I have installed a brand-new downloaded RH9 on a dual PIII Xeon 800 MHz Compaq SP750. / is mounted on /dev/hdb3. All updates are applied before the installation of NVidia driver Linux IA32 1.0-4363. I have a GF3 card

A Rad-7C is connected to the 15 pin VGA connector of the graphics card.

:confused: I boot the system in text mode (3), and it takes 5 minutes to bring up X window.

:( I have reinstalled the system twice at least as I thought something was wrong with my installation.

Please advise.

From the README:

Q: X takes a long time to start. What can I do?

A: Most of the startx delay problems we have found are caused by incorrect
data in video BIOSes about what display devices are possibly connected
or what i2c port should be used for detection. You can work around
these problems with the XF86Config option "IgnoreDisplayDevices"
(please see the description in (app-d) APPENDIX D: XF86CONFIG OPTIONS).

I have an SMP Redhat9 machine, using the 1.0-4363 drivers on a GF3 Ti200, and have never had this problem. Wish I could help, but at least you can eliminate RH9/SMP as the cause of the problem.

'nv' can start very fast (in a second).

just found a normal account can start X quickly, just a little bit slower than 'nv'.

So only root is being slow?

No problem. Just never run X as root.

And yes, I'm serious. That's not a good idea anyway; if you've got Konqueror open in /dev (or /usr/bin), for example, you can easily blow it all away if you're running Konqueror as root. Not so if you're just a low-level user.
