Clearly they're legit (check out the Game Informer little screenshot crop). I think it looks fine, personally, but to each his own. I really hope these are just action shots for the third-person perspective, though... I'd really hope they keep it first-person.

Edit: More screenshots...

I'm sorry. Until Mars grows more jungle all games set on Mars have been banned.

That looks ugly to me, but... it IS early... so there is lots of hope. Of course, gameplay is what matters, so hopefully the game has intense action like the first one.

They are legit and I've seen a very early build in play, I will say just this they do a great job on building physics and the destruction looks to be pretty sweet. By the way, I live in Champaign, Volition is about 10 blocks down the street from me. :)

Ok.. We've got a retard athletic with a headband, a very un-mars-ey looking gameworld, and an apparent lack of GeoMod visible in any of the screenshots.

If it's set on Mars, how the hell are they breathing? At least in the first game you had a damn miner suit. Sorry, this just doesn't look too good to me. If they want to make a Red Faction 3, they need to take a look at what people have said. Red Faction 1 was a great, average-budget shooter with strong and still well-played multiplayer base and fantastic GeoMod capabilities.. RF2 screwed itself over with no mutliplayer, barely any story-ties, and set itself on EARTH (for crying out loud) with extremely limited and below-average 'GeoMod', if you could call it that.

I hope there is some official comment soon such as "This is not Red Faction 3". That would be nice.

You are extremely lucky. Red Faction is one of my all-time favorite games (especially FPS), along with Half-Life 2.

Can you confirm if it is or isn't third-person only?

Sobbsy: As id said when Doom III was being developed (to paraphrase): we know you need a helmet to live on Mars. We don't care. It's a game. Furthermore, I'd be more than willing to bet this game will have GeoMod.

There was no second game. It skipped from Red Faction I to Red Faction III (Guerrilla) :)

RF:1 was very smooth at gameplay and I LOVVED the fact that rockets blew up the earthy parts where u were at. MUCCH much ahead of it's time, so far in fact, this time period is still left wanting "more where that came from."

Graphics are cool and all, but good gameplay sure packs a mean punch when it comes to games. Gameplay 1st, graphics 2nd, is what I say!! :rw: :type: (foshiz)

Wow this looks really bad :(
The shots are highly compressed and not official shots. Don't worry about the graphics -- given Volition's previous games, it will look decent at the very least.

The new Game Informer, which for some unholy reason I get in the mail, has a large article on this... It sounds like they have some good ideas, but even the shots in the magazine look weak, and why switch to 3rd person?

Anyway, something to look at in the grocery store for you guys.

Think about it: we're talking about many years in the future.

Read the article in Game Informer. It sounds like they're going back to their origins, and making this one more like RF1 (at least story-wise). It also says that there are extensive multiplayer modes, and it will be on Mars. It seems to me they have paid quite a bit of attention to what people have said, and I for one am really looking forward to it. I'm sure they wouldn't have taken this long to give us another Red Faction unless they were making sure it was a hundred times better than RF2.

Thank you for being reassuring. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. All I ask is they ditch the headband :p

The second game was absolutely nothing like the first, and most Red Faction fans consider it to be horrible in comparison to the first.
