We knew Blu-ray had 100GB and 200GB prototype a few years ago and now I noticed this:

Hitachi developed 500GB Blu-ray disc prototype.

75 GB disc? Actually 100, 150 and 200 GB are already showcased and current players will be able to read those discs without firmware update. (unless it requires so)
Those are under development by TDK, Hitachi, Pioneer and JVC. I think each comes up with different solution so maybe we'll expect to see them in use for movies within next few years.

Oh I dont realised it japanese, now the quote is now cleaned up:
Post "Blu-ray Disc" about efforts. レーザー照射時に発生する熱を利用した超解像再生によって、50nmピットの再生を実現。 Laser-generated heat when using super-resolution playback of the pit achieve the rebirth of 50 nm. 多層化とあわせ1枚あたり500GBの容量を実現可能 And multilayer per according to the capacity of 500 GB feasibility

got proof that it will work?
there is already a new disc out there will not work, firmware could fix, could is a big word. even if it might fix with some players/drives other people will be screwed.

It says "Post Blu Ray", which could very well mean the next optical standard AFTER Blue Ray.

like i said, they're working on different solution and some would need firmware update, while some solution doesn't need the update.
that's why i said "unless it requires so" about firmware update. ;)

500gb is pocket change I'd need a half dozen of them to do a single home backup.

Oh yeah?! I use 500gb as coasters. I'd need 2 dozen of them just to backup my porn collection.

i'm sure a lot of game developers might be interested in this and it's good for them in the future since games are growing in size.
i wonder if next xbox and next wii will be using blu-ray. i'm not sure about wii and it depends with microsoft if they want to jump in using blu-ray. ps4 is no brainer unless blu-ray flops unexpectedly.
