View Full Version : EVGA e-GeForce 9600 GT SSC Review
Today marks the launch of NVIDIA's GeForce 9 Series of Graphics Processing Units and they hit the ground running with the mid-range GeForce 9600 GT. We are pretty certain the high-end is soon to follow :)

Today we have news to share as NVIDIA is launching its first Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) based on the GeForce 9 Series - the GeForce 9600 GT. Building on the success of the unified architecture present on the GeForce 8, the GeForce 9 Series features enhanced compression technology, which reduces the amount of data that passes through the memory bus. Graphics cards with the GeForce 9600 GT are targeted at the mainstream segment with a suggested price between $169 and $189.

Thanks!
Thanks. Awesome graphics card! I'll have those detailed SLI results from the minimum frame rate comparison posted this evening.
Good comparison! I was just reading Anandtech's and was asking myself why they didn't included 8800gt 512mb results. Thanks for providing exactly what I was looking for. The bigger websites are more shady these days, trying to make the product stand out in the field by omitting results.

Agreed... and AA non-AA benchies are very useful as well. :afro:
Nice review and awesome performance! Liking the EVGA design as well(the 8800gts was just meh... ;) ) too bad the pcb's green... :-/
Nice review, but why don't you test it against a 3870?

I want to know how this card will perform compared to 1 8800GT(512) in a 1280x1024 resolution in crysis with everything on very high and no AA

I don't think AMD is too keen on sending press samples to Nvnews, but I could be wrong...

I can't find something quite that specific but this is pretty close. It's on High settings instead of very high, but I doubt it would make a big difference other than dropping the framerate a little more. http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/02/21/nvidia_geforce_9600_gt/page13.html

It might just be that Mike doesn't have any partners lined up to get ATi cards to test with.

I have purchased a 3850 to compare to the 9600GT. I didn't have time to compare the ATI card so Rytr is going to compare it in his Inno3d 9600Gt review. I paid $169.00 for my 3850 it was not a review sample.

Good stuff as always.
I was on the hunt for a new card as my brother is looking for a new card to replace his 6600 GT. I think with performance nearing that of the 8800 GT. This card maybe the one!!!

Cause we're all fanboys so we'll certainly trash their cards in a review. :p
@MUYA: Yea I'm hoping the same thing. I have a pc with a 6800GT in it that is starting to show some age in games, so I need something that is small enough to fit into the tight space, not overload the psu, but still have enough graphics power.

Problem for me lies in, with the 9800 GT or GTX rumoured to be launched in March....I have somewhat of a dilema.
My brother is in Nepal, and I have a friend who is going back there from Hong Kong. But he is going in March 18th. Now if a 9800 GTX is launched showing the same characteristics ie an improvement and what seems to be new tweaked ROPs then, I could give my 8800GTX to my brother etc and buy the new 9800 GT or GTX. Then comes the problem of shipping the new mobo and CPU. I dunno when Intel is launching the new 45nm quadcores! Aiiieeeyaaah!
But the 9600 GT seems very very good. Almost akin to the 7800 to 7900 phenomena!

So really if you're buying a card today, buy the 9600GT and save $100 over the 8800GT. That is cool.
What I can't wait to see is what $300 will buy you from NVIDIA up and coming. Most likely the true successor to the 8800GT, a 9800GT. That card should be smokin fast. Based on these 9600GT numbers.

You won't save that much, more like $40, but it's still some savings. I'm hoping we'll see a 128SP 9800GT based off of the tweaked 9600GT, and that should give a pretty healthy gain. Then we just need a 196SP 9800GTX. :D
EDIT: Well I found MUYA's post in the rumor mill. Apparently the 9800GT will be a 128SP card. The GX2 will be 2 9800GTs stuck together. If that's the case then I have a feeling these cards will be much faster than what everyone's impressions are. Since a 9600GT with only 64SP can run with the 128SP cards from the 8 series, we could be in for a real treat. Also, I'm keeping my prediction for the 9800GTX as that would put it right between a 9800GX2 and 9800GT.

With the launch of the mid-range GeForce 9600 GT marking the debut of Nvidia's GeForce 9-series, graphics card makers have revealed details of the rest of the cards Nvidia is scheduled to launch in the coming months.
At the top-end of the 9-series cards will sit the dual-GPU GeForce 9800 GX2 which will launch on March 11 this year. This will be followed by the GeForce 9800 GTX and 9800 GT between the end of March and beginning of April.
For the mid-range Nvidia will offer the GeForce 9600 GS in May, according the sources.
In June, the company will launch the value-level GeForce 9500 GT based on the G96 graphics core with a reduced 128-bit memory interface. To complete the series, the GeForce 9500 GS will launch in July.
Nvidia's share of the discrete entry-level graphics card market (US$30-90) has shrunk to less than 3%. Therefore, Nvidia will not target this market with 9-series products in the near-term, and instead will promote the increasing performance of its IGP chipsets.
Nvidia declined to opportunity to respond saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

I think the settings used should be detailed with each game and not in a separate page. It makes comparisons between the charts and the settings too difficult.

I have a good idea for you. Buy a 9600GT for yourself, and give your 8800GTX to your brother. Then use a step-up to a 9800 when it comes out. As for the mobo and CPU that's a tough one as well. I've been waiting for a while now to upgrade from my athlon X2 to a quadcore but it seems like Intel doesn't want my money cause they won't release their processors. :p

Thanks!
Great review Mike! I noticed there wasn't any mention of it's HD video decoding capabilities, and I read else where it's comparable to the 8800GT. Would it be possible to do a quick comparison and post the results in the forum? Thank you.
I think the settings used should be detailed with each game and not in a separate page. It makes comparisons between the charts and the settings too difficult.I have done that in the past, but just recently began documenting in-game settings again.
Actually, I've been contemplating creating a single settings page that can be referenced in future reviews as I normally use the same settings from review to review. Plus the settings are not too difficult to remember since they are almost always based on the the highest quality settings.
I don't particularly like reviews that list the results for each game on a separate page. My 9 page review could easily turn into 20 pages. I prefer to list the results from all the games on one page per resolution tested.

Would it be possible to do a quick comparison and post the results in the forum? Thank you.Thank you. Yes, the review was somewhat rushed and I failed to document some key features like HD video and PureVideo HD. Although I rarely use my PC to watch DVDs, I realize that it is a feature that others are interested in. Can you be more specific about the tests that you would like me to run? Are you referring to a measure of CPU utilization during playback?
