Let's look at the benches in common of Tri-fire.......http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3232&p=3.......http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3183&p=3

UT3............................................... .....112............114...................146
Bioshock.......................................... ....86.............92......................103
COD4.............................................. ....72..............93........................100
Crysis............................................ ......26..............27.........................4 3

1. Even with 4 GPUs, ATi's highest end product does not compete with the 3 highest NVIDIA GPUs.

2. Only one of those benches (COD4) has AA on, and we all know how the current ATi products shader resolve AA sinks performance.

The two 3870x2's looks to be doing a pretty good job.I mean a 3870 can't really compete with a 8800 Ultra or a 8800GTX and besides that Three 3850's go for around $522 and three 3870's are around $600,as low as $552 with the SAPPHIRE with GDDR4 and two 3870x2 are around $900 compare that to three 8800Ultra's for around $2000 and for three 8800GTX's around $1200 and low as $1077 after rebates with the EVGA .The Tri SLI should do better since it has the stronger cards ,but three Sapphires 3870's with GDDR4 for $552 is'nt a bad deal.

What makes me mad at nvidia is that they should have made all the 8800's be able to do TRI SLI.

The problem with Crossfire is there are far too many titles where it actually causes less performance than a single card when active.

Titles I am aware of that Crossfire does this in would be; SupCom, Gothic 3, NWN2, Need for Speed: Pro Street, WiC on the DX10 path with AA, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Tomb Raider: Legend, Hellgate: London, and Jericho with edge smoothing active. There may be more.

Currently the only way around this problem with the X2 would be to disable CAT AI which would kill on board Crossfire (as well as regular Crossfire), leaving you with a little less than a single HD 3870 in performance. Killing CAT AI also turns off all driver fixes while it remains disabled. Having to use quad fire as a single GPU in some titles with driver fixes disabled to boot, is not attractive.

SLi isn't 100% either and at this time it's more reliable, and gives better performance in a wider range of titles. Alone or in groups the G80s are proven to be a more balanced family of GPUs.
