A situation has come up in which I am able to sell my XFX 8600GT w/Zalman for retail price to a friend of a friend. I'm thinking this is the perfect opp to get a new card because I'll never be able to make that much off it on ebay or a forum. What would be the best 9600GT to get because it's probably the best card I can afford? I am thinking of this one but I'm not a huge fan of PNY. The price is pretty good though, I only say pretty good cause tax adds $10 for me in IL.

Otherwise I'd probably feel more comfortable getting a brand like Evga but not sure if the extra money would be worth it or not.

GeForce 9600 GTs ranging in price from $169.99 to $249.99 here:
http://nvnews.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page_id=5/form_keyword=geforce+9600+gt/rd=1/st=sort/sortby=priceA

For $169.99, the ECS 9600 GT runs at 650MHz/1800MHz.

Any of the cards priced at $174.99 should also suit your needs:
ZOTAC - 675MHz/1800MHz
MSI - 700MHz /1900MHz

Edit: I just went to the link for the PNY 9600 GT. I would definitely get for $151.99! Note that the core and memory speeds are slightly lower (650MHz/1800MHz) than the cards above. You might even be able to overclock this puppy to the MSI speeds. That would be a bonus :)

from what experience I've had with PNY, I would say the extra money for the EVGA is worth it.

9600GT SSC Superclocked^^^
yeah that would be the obvious choice but that's a bit out of my price range.

I suggest getting an EVGA 9600GT. The SSC was out of my range, so I got the regular SuperClocked edition....2 of them.

I'll prob do that then or get the MSI. Good thing is if I get it from buy.com I can use google checkout for the first time and get $10 off. Buy.com is fine to get video cards from right...

I still say the 8800GT's are better. You can get the same one's I have for $186 each at the egg.

that's after the rebate though I think. I really don't like rebates to be honest. Maybe cause I'm too broke to wait for the money to come back in the mail but oh well.

ps If someone wants to help me get an 8800gt go buy one of my tv series in the for sale forum.

crap. just realized will my power supply be enough for one of these?

yea, the min req recommended by Nvidia is a 400W PSU. I have one in a pc with an E6600 and a bunch of other stuff on a 305W psu and it's running just fine. EDIT: I'm talking about the 9600GT not the 8800GT. The 8800GT draws a little more power but I think a 430W should be able to handle one of them.

I'm gonna order an EVGA 9600GT tonight. Is there really any dif between the regular superclocked version and the KO edition besides the clock speeds? I'm guessing maybe the KO edition uses better ram or something. Wondering if the 10 bucks is worth it for the slightly higher clocks by default.

Just look to upgrade your PSU in the near future and you should be fine. Psu's tend to lose 5-10% of wattage as the years go by

That's like saying sweet apples are better than slightly sweet apples.. They're still the same, one's just a hair better....

My regular SC edition comes tomorrow. Decided if I was gonna play more than I did I might as well have got the 8800gt. What are the best drivers for this card atm? Seems to be a lot of people complaining on various forums about random crashing.

I'm using the driver that came on the CD, 171.16. I got a lot of crashing with the 174.16 drivers.

Did you order the 9600GT or the 8800GT? Sorry, confusion set in. I hope to get one or the other soon. Enjoy, man!

I got the 9600gt. the 8800gt has always been out of my price range because the good deals are always after rebate.

w00t! this card rocks. I know it's only midrange but feels like high end to me. UT3 runs great I feel like a pro playing now because everything is so smooth I can aim much easier.
