I installed them over 174.31 and was not asked about overwriting newer files.

i haven't installed these yet, but let me guess they are missing all that new fancy stuff their added in 174 series?

nvapps.xml file is smaller, so its missing some profiles comapred to 174.31

DV works. Doom3 timedemo back up to 225fps. Dropped to 169 fps with 174.31 for me. Frames Prerender is not there, nor any of the other fancy 174.x stuff.

so these aren't for 9 series cards then? my 9600gt just came in the mail earlier this evening. do I still use the older beta for that?

9600GT deviceID is not in the INF. You'll need to either mod it or use 174.16 WHQL or 174.20 beta.
