I have an old Dell Inspiron 3800 w/ Windows 98 (600mHz Celery LOL), and I'm trying to get it to read my memorex USB travel drive, but it doesn't have the correct driver. Also the DVD reader won't read my DVD R/RW that I burned the drivers onto, I suppose because it's 8 years old. Oh, and it only has a jack for the phone modem so no internets, and last but not least it doesn't have a floppy drive. So any ideas how to get the drivers onto the old lappy?

Or any ideas how to make the travel drive compatible with Windows 98?

Thanks guys.

Yes, it is 98 SE.

I found that driver... but have no way to get it onto the lappy since the traveldrive won't work without it. :headexplode:

-no floppy
-dvd drive won't read my dvd-r
-dial-up only

Any ideas?

Your best option is to buy USB DVD enclosure on ebay, all enclsoures supplied with a driver CD that included Windows 98/98SE drivers and install a IDE or SATA DVD-RW drive in the enclosure.

if it has a pc-card (I learned myself not to say pcmcia) slot you can get a lan card but cd should work fine

What about another pen drive? do they all require drivers with 98se?

I'm just trying to use it for word processing...

I'll try using a blank CD if I can find one around... the lappy does have a DVD drive but it doesn't recognize the DVD-R I'm burning with the driver on it for whatever reason.

Another pen drive or CD enclosure might work but I'm trying not to spend any money on this... it's a 600mhz celeron with 128mb of ram after all. ;)

98SE will require a driver for every type of pen drive, and every type of external enclosure. so buying a different drive won't help

Bah.

Think Win 98SE the reason the DVD won't read correctly?

dvd is just storage, it should work, but some old old DVD-Roms will not like burned disc.

few things to try
burn dvd+r in dvd-rom book type
make sure you burn in ISO 9660 format only, UDF won't work

Hmmm... is UDF the default? I'm just copying the files straight over from my Vista desktop.

i think in vista it is defualt, use nero, it gives more options, and choose ISO 9660.

plus make sure you close the Disc. ROM (read only) usually will never read open session disc

don't have nero... will the demo version do it for me?

And by that last part, you mean to check that the DVD is read only, correct?

And how do you kill the gollem?

Thanks for your quick reply on all of this nekro. ;)

Shoot, that driver didn't work. The lappy says that the drivers are still not installed for unknown USB device, even though I installed those drivers.

It is the old 512MB traveldrive... must have a different driver. :(

The nero trick worked for the DVD player tho.

good :D

Ya, thanks.

So if that driver is correct the lappy should detect the traveldrive right away right? Think there's any tinkering to be done to get it to work?

i haven't worked with 98 in long time, but i remember that a reboot is required after a driver install
