I'm considering giving Firefox a try (finally)...

Any good config tips for a first time user? I'm looking at some online tutorials, but if there's anything you guys use or sites you know of, I'd appreciate it.

I'm currently using Maxthon, but it's just a shell over IE7. It has a nice "groups" feature, where you can save multiple tabs as a group and open them all at once with one click. It also has an integrated ad blocker that allows you to add specific items on a given page to the "block" list. Does Firefox do this as well (maybe via an extension)?

Nevermind about the groups and adblocker questions...I've been playing with it and got it figured out.

Will still take any good config advice, though!

yea theres a few things i can recommend
1. adblock plus
2. filterset.g updater for adblock (adds many sets of filters and effectively removes almost all ads)
3. go to about:config and look for network.http.pipelining and set it to true to allow multiple connections to websites
4. go here to download the sse2 optimised version of firefox

Thanks for the tips, guys.

Eliminator, is the performance difference noticeable with the SSE2 version? Do I install over the existing (2.0.0.12) version, or uninstall first? Does it break anything?

Thanks again...

yea the SSE2 version is a bit faster mostly with web pages with a lot of media of them... i would recommend to remove your current version first... dont uninstall... just delete everything in the firefox folder and then place the new firefox into that same folder after... all your settings and plugins should still be there since they are saved somewhere else

just another note... this is the open source version of firefox and its called Bon Echo (firefox 2) or Minefield (firefox 3) and some websites might not detect it as firefox so here is a little tip to get around that... go to about:config... right click and make a new string... type in "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071011 Firefox/2.0.0.12" without quotes... you can also change to anything you like and make any website think you're using a different browser

Is that different than just running Faster Fox and/or opening all the connections in Windows with that EventID patch?

i dont know about faster fox but enabling connections in windows is separate... you need to tell firefox to make multiple connections

I'll have to take a look to see if that has changed in the config since I'm using FasterFox, unless someone posts here about it first.
