Just go with whatever you prefer here:
HD3870(Cheaper) or 8800GT (Faster)

And thats all she wrote
I wold stick with the 8800GT. Here in the UK, there are more or less the same price and the gt seems to edge it in the majority of benchmarks.
Do you turn on AA a lot? If so 8800GT might be better.
I guess that's not all she wrote....
When I saw the title of the thread, I though we were welcoming another homo to the nvnews team....
Not that there is anything wrong with two guys sticking their weiners and fruit in each others buts.

Ok I had 3870 for testing this weekend and it was much worse than I was expecting. Tomorrow I will have 8800gt inno3d OC edition. Hope it will be faster :D

why not 2 9600GT's? MSI N9600GT $164.99 / MIR -20.00 = 144.99.

Well, the GT is some 20% faster than the HD3870. Of course the latter should be cheaper as well.

the biggest difference to me is the filtering quality although that doesnt matter in some dx10 games, they only use bilinear filtering just plain sucks asssss$$$$$$$ damn i miss the days when > 1% of games were opengl. i believe hl2 wouldn't have been as buggy had the source engine been coded with opengl in mind.
I ABSOLUTELY ****ING LOVE OPENGL!

It's your money and there is nothing rebellious or cool about buying under performing|sub par hardware.

I agree. Stick with the home team and buy nVidia.
For example where...
8800GT is a ~ $200 card for the most part now.
3870 is a ~$189 card now as well.
I say that if you are a fan of one over the other and the cost is not a big difference between the two? get the company YOU are comfortable with. 3870 is not that much slower than an 8800GT with the exception of perhaps a small collection of DX10 mode titles like WiC and so on. At least in my experience.
If you are not partial to one over the other, get the best one you can afford in your budget regardless of which "team". In this case the 8800GT is 10-15% (Some Ultra clocked editions even moreso) faster for not much more at this point.
The choice is different every month now as the pricing is crashing. Months ago the 3870 was the $220 card and the 8800GT was the $270 card.
One area where ATI needs to do something is between the 3870 and the 3870x2. $189 to $400 and nothing in between whereas if your budget is $300 - $350 range? Well. You have 8800GTS512's and GTX's and the like. That said though, This price war is going nutso and there have never been so many damn options out there.
Look at the 3870 at $189 now. This card is every bit as fast as the 8800GTS 640MB. And it's $189!!! The 8800GT is GTX territory in many ways or just short of it and it's $200 bones!
Wow.

The only tiny remote change i would buy a 3870 is when :
-the ati price cuts are true they will put the 3870 at the same price as 9600GT

,I dont plan any overclocking and completly ignore that a 9600 gt runs A LOT cooler with one slot cooler
-i would buy a 780G with a 9650 phenom+ 3870 (miracle one 9650 performs as a Q6600 , miracle two i completly ignore a 17C idling Q9450 , miracle 3 the 9650 comes out ) for hybrid crossfire which is really nicely done (:( give this chispset for intel cryyyy)
