win xp sp2 and windows media player 11 video problems

I installed windows media player 11 and all the video clips I have saved on my computer do not play. The player says its opening the media and stops responding. At this point task manger tells me that my CPU is running a 100% and that all of it is the player. The only way to shut it down is to close it down in task manger. I can't find any updates for it.

but shouldn't it have the codecs already? and it doesn't give me a codec error either.

My point was there's Media Player Classic included in the K-Lite pack, might as well give it a try along with a fresh batch of codecs.
