Okay I was wondering if you dudes could help me :D
Im looking to network some machines in my house. The below is what im contemplating...
Netgear 8 port gigabit router.
3 gigabit cards (only one pc has gigabit ethernet atm and the laptops cant :()
Atm my network is some crappy router with crappy cables. Ive just connected and went network wizard and that was it. It allows me to play games.
Should I do more than that and what possible benifits would it include.
Pcs are all xp32bit (one laptops vista but ill change that :) )

You should be fine with what you have. Gigabit is really only needed of you want to transfer huge files, like vids to and from a Media Centre.

wow. How do you get a 10gb network core.
Its mainly for LAN games (BF2, CS-S, WiC etC) though I do transfer ISo's etc :)

I ran into network bottle necks on my 100base.
Wife streaming HD while I was playing games/listening to music(files on another computer).
Gigabit was a nice addition.
Save some Change and get the SMC 8 port switc, I have two :)
If you have a Linksys WRT54G router you may want to check out Tomato as a OS for it, mine has been unbelieveable since I made the switch.

Ensure all computers on the network are on the same workhroup. I have a linux box that just hosts most of my files... Heres how I got it setup.
I created a central location for all shared files on the network on the server, which is just a series of symbolic links going to all the other computers shared files... Its actually quite nice and convenient.
