Pretty soon I plan on building a computer for my brother with around $1500 - $2000 for his budget and I want to get some good parts for it. The price will have to be with a monitor so im figuring its going to be about $2000 with a monitor $1500 without. I wanna try SLI, probably go with Intel quad core(Q6600), 4gb ram, and air cooling. I have been looking into the EVGA 780i motherboard because I heard some pretty good things about it. Here is a list that I am considering. Please feel free to suggest, add, or remove anything from my list. I thank you in advance for any help that you provide.

Q6600
2 x 8800gts g92
EVGA 780i
4gb Corsair Dominator PC2 8500
OCZ 700w PSU
500gb 7200.10 barracuda HDD
Samsung 2493HM 24" lcd monitor (new monitor and looks very sharp)

+1 That's basically the configuration I'm doing for 2 friends. The only thing I'm on the fence about is the 780i board. They seemed to have mixed reviews depending upon who you talk to.

If you plan on doing any over clocking I'd up that PSU a little, I didn't get nearly as stable OC's with the 700w as with the 850w

Comparing the 780i to the 680i I hear that the 780 runs the quad cores much better. Is it true that the old 680i motherboards have slight difficulties running quads to thier potential?

680i's had one of the highest failure rates out of any mobo I have ever seen. And yes, some had some issues running/ocing quads.

May I suggest 9600GT SLI? I saw some chart somewhere, they're GREAT to SLI with. Even better than 8800GTX and Ultra?

But I doubt 9600GT in SLI would beat 8800GTS in SLI.

There should be some good deals on gtx's and ultras once the entire 9-series hits, picking up a used 8800gtx on ebay is becoming a more and more viable options these days.

atleast you have some more stability with an x38. I am really torn about what I am going to do for my next upgrade, 780i vs. x48 (nvidia vs ati), so many decissions I don't want to make.

Unless I'm wrong?

[Edit] Oh I thought P35/P45 is SLI-able boards, but they're Intel. My bad. I was wrong.

Buy a Q9300 instead. Almost same price and better processor.

well I would go for a q9300 over a q6600 anyday, but if you plan to overcloack at all, go for the q9450, theQ9300 seems to be a bad clocker

The build in my sig was a total of roughly 1600, not including the monitor and speakers.

Off topic> would someone see any perofrmance gains using ddr2 800 vs. ddr2 1200?

I had done a very thorough benchmark comparing the 2 in different tasks. From media trans coding to gaming the answer is yes 1%-3% So dont bother go for the lower latencies and a 1:1 ratio
