I had this installed on Wednesday, not sure why Microsoft decided to release another refresh build 5508 when they planned to signed off build 5503 as RTM if it all went well. Maybe Microsoft found 5 serious bugs at the last min and released build 5508 so they now have about 2 weeks left before SP3 RTM go live on Windows Update.

I just installed this one, and it says it is SP3, while with the last refresh it also said v3311 or the likes.

Hmm...to install..or not to install...

its up to you, when Vista SP1 went ESCROW, everything went good and few days later was announced RTM.

In few days we should know if XP SP3 ESCROW will go RTM aswel

That's because 5503 was only final in your brain... The article you posted 2 weeks back doesn't confirm anywhere that it was final...

Same thing happened with Vista SP1 build 18000 send to the same private testers group back in middle of January who tested XP SP3 build 5503 did not confirmed it was the final with the desktop build tag removed until 4 February long before 15th February Vista SP1 RTM deadline. One possible reason why Microsoft want to release another build to public just to make sure it have no trouble installing to avoid same mistakes with Vista SP1 many people complained about installation errors that cant be fixed still not resolved.

Dude the point is: You said Microsoft confirmed it to be final, when they didn't. And now you're surprised there's a new build???

Just FYI, if anyone still has an old pre-SP1 disc, according to this (http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/xp_sp3.asp), SP1 will need to be installed first, SP2 recommended, but not necessary.

Thanks Nekro for the dl.

Yeah me and various website source are surprised with a new build released and realised Microsoft not doing the same way they did with Vista SP1 build 18000. Back in January when it leaked I found no build tag on desktop that I had a feel it could be the RTM but rumour there was a new build released to private testers that is newer than 18000. I found out build 18000 was RTM on 4 February when Microsoft announced and I downloaded it and found it was the same build leaked to private testers.

Accorded to various source claimed SP3 RTM will released on 24th March but they all surprised that they got it wrong when Microsoft decided to released another build on 26th March to the public, that is unusual Microsoft never released Vista SP1 RC escrow build 18000 to the public that did not have build tag on desktop. The final Vista SP1 RC refresh Microsoft released to public was build 17128 on 10 January so it was not an escrow build.

Installed it. Everything still works. How do you check the build number?

this is probably the easiest non-technical way.

It simply says Service Pack 3 on my setup.

Im wondering what they did in this version?

It seems the same to me as the previous build but its final from what i see.

What the hell is escrow?

Isn't that something in home buying?

it is, but also its a term that microsoft uses.

escrow means that software is final, unless there are some huge huge issues. usually it takes 1-2 weeks to determine if escrow will go RTM
