Avast or AVG
I read a web site that compared avirl, avast, and avg, and Avirl had the better detection rate, like an average of %96 vs AVG (which came in 3rd) average of %92.
I had been using AVG, so I tried Avirl and it actually picked up a couple of trojans that were in some old archives that I had in my "questionable" download folder and just forgot about.
Avirl can be had at http://www.free-av.com/.

Avast is my pick of the free ones. Especially if you have 64bit Vista.
