Get ready for the future of gaming. Many of you may know about Stereoscopic Technology, Beowulf type of 3D. It’s been possible for many years to play almost any PC game in actual 3D better than Beowulf. For those of you who have never played Stalker, HL2 or Oblivion in Stereo 3D you have no idea how large of an impact this could have to gaming, simply put it’s amazing. Some of you may have seen 3D displays popping up at shows. Right now you have to wear glasses or have a giant setup, it’s pretty complicated and difficult to get PC games running in 3D and it hasn’t been widely supported by anyone. Current technologies all use the same basic principles with many methods to implement it. With the invent of slim displays, new…good, cheaper and convenient methods of 3D have been created. In any method the 3D scene has to be rendered from two different perspectives, one for each eye. So if you get 60fps normally you get 30fps in stereo. It is heavily and directly linked to V-sync and who’s been endlessly messing with V-sync? Post processing effects are currently not possible with 3D because they are not rendered in 3D they are laid over the 3D assets. So games had to modified, PP turned off and tweaked to work in 3D. It is said MS and NV have a solution. Totally new Stereo 3D options have already appeared in new Nvidia drivers.

Electronic Arts has put out a press release to announce a partnership with Samsung to develop all of their current and future games to be compatible with Samsungs new 3DHDTV. Their HDTV uses plasma display panel technology, no details on how they achieve 3D. Whether it be with or without glasses A FRIGGEN 3DTV meant to play 3D movies and 3D PC games WOW and also note no plans for consoles, ha. They also make a point to call it a TV and to note there are no plans to support current monitors. There has been an odd silence around Nvidia Stereo drivers and support over the past year almost like they under an NDA and the V-sync thing. MS has said stereo will be supported in Vista and NV has said in the past they are working on some massive driver update to make it allot easier and compatible with post processing.

Publishing Manager for Electronic Arts Korea:
Need For Speed ProStreet, Crysis, The Sims 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 and Madden NFL 08 are the titles that we have collaborated with from the beginning, and more content will be provided through the upcoming title lineup from EA.
The vast landscape graphics, the details of each race car, and the special effects, as well as the perception of space for Need For Speed ProStreet is presented in glorious sophistication on Samsung’s 3D TVs.

When Microsoft is involved, along with Sony them and their TVs and consoles and operating systems this is absolutely huge. Sony, Samsung, Phillips and so on can’t not also have their 3DHDTVs at the ready. When mainstream HD 3D TVs hit it’s just going to be huge. 3DTV people. It’s very easy for anyone to take a 3D picture or home movie as well… or rather it will be when they come out. Think 3D touch-screen Vista, 3D Halo, 3D GTHD even 3D porn. I would also think either the next gen of consoles or maybe the PS3 will be capable of a 3D output, in fact I think that's all this is about in the end. PC first then con$ole$.

If you take these shots, save them and view them as full screen as possible and then go cross eyed until you see one combined image in the middle you can get an idea of how great newer games look in 3D. You might have to sit back from the screen a bit.

Mitsubishi has also now announced they have a HD 3DTV ready to go and future plans for a laser3D HDTV.
I also just found out the 174.74 Vista drivers that just came out support stereo now.

Adds support for NVIDIA GeForce 3D Stereo Technology for GeForce 6, 7, 8, or 9 Series GPUs, including SLI technology.

Why does this look better than any Neverwinter shot I could ever produce. Is there a secret to making that game look... well... not ugly? Or is that another game with the Neverwinter eye on the HUD for some readon?

That is actually Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Its a Source engine game.

Ah... I own that, never really played it. Too buggy at release and I keep putting it off since the patches fixed it. Looks sweet... that totally looks like a Neverwinter eye.

Only problem is, it doesn't work properly with Vista. Or at least last time i checked it didn't.

I've never really tried any 3d gaming because I've heard so much about it being inconsistent and buggy. I've always wanted to though.

Hopefully we get some massive graphics card improvements though. There is no way current graphics cards will be able to handle any recent games in 3d at a decent resolution. Though I guess resolution probably doesn't matter quite as much in 3d since you're sort of seeing 2 images at the same time anyway.

I can't wait to see how this pans out.

Interesting...I hope it's done well...I bought some of those 3D Stereo glasses years back...There were alot of issues, like in EQ, the depth was cool, but the chat boxes, etc all were non-3d, so it looked kinda off...And when playing FPS's, it would start to give me a headache after about 1/2 hour (and I'm not prone to headaches)...

How is aiming going to work in first person shooters? I never really understood what your cross hairs did when you saw 2 slightly different images.

Games with iron-sights aiming or scopes would be pretty sweet though... they could just put the sights up to the right eye and you could actually close one eye to see down the sights.

Electronic Arts getting behind it is a good sign. The problem with previous incarnations of 3D was that the game devs never got on board. I have a pair of the shutter glasses and they worked fantastic for certain games (Homeword for example), but alot of game devs use shortcuts that can destroy the effect.

One of the Mechwarrior games had patches of grass that were represented by 2D grass sprites. Problem was they placed them at the zero level of the Z-axis and scaled them rather than placing them at the correct depth in the environment. When you looked at it with the glasses on the grass was all floating right in your face even if it was supposed to be far away.

I played Space Harrier in 3D on the Sega Master System :D

I loved it. Anyone else?

Yup, this has been one of the biggest problems with stereo. The reason cross hairs didn't work was because devs never bothered to render HUDs at the correct screen depth for 3D. You would always see two cross hairs or have to turn them off. There is an option in the NV drivers to turn on a 3D cross hair or 3D laser pointer type of thing, it actually looks pretty cool. When all this happens HUD depth will no longer be an issue. Aiming down the site is pretty darn sweet looking in COD4 and BF2 in 3D. If you have a 7900 or lower you can almost certanly have pretty stable 3D. I waited over year to play games in 3D on my 8800 and it's now possible. It also never worked with dual cores and it is now. I'm still trying to get crysis working but FarCry is amazing.

Did they make some new drivers allowing the 3D glasses with the 8800? When I looked you had to run XP and drivers so old that they didn't even support the 8800.

isn't this available now on 120hz dlp sets, though not practical as a computer monitor since the smallest model is the 50".

This has to be a really difficult item to do marketing for...

No pictures or videos can possible show what it does. It just looks like a normal TV in photos.

Cool, I didn't realize that stereo was actually being supported properly again.

What kind of glasses do you use?

MaXThReAT

I'm using just some standard wired shutter glasses from eDimensional. Using XP 171.23 beta and stereo 162.50 driver combo from mtbs3d.com Its still not perfect but allot of game work now. I haven't tried the new 174.74 in vista yet but the word is they only work for Zalman's 3D monitor.

2. edited registry for old forceware menu:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\Stereo3D]
- "ShowAllViewerTypes"=dword:00000001 (necessary if you want more S3D viewer type option in Stereo Control Panel)
- ContextUIPolicy to 1 (this is to get the old control panel)
- CplGroupUIPolicy to 1 (this is to get the old control panel)

3. installed nhancer and set global configuration (this is to eliminate artefacts) to
- anti aliasing to supersampling 4x4 or 1x2 for better performance
- enhance aa yes
- gamma correction yes (not nescessary)
- super transperancy yes (not nescessary)
- and than thats the most important:
under copatibility aa compatibilty to oblivion HDR

4. Don't forget to force vsync in nhancer otherwise youŽll get blackscreen.
