A friend of mine has a strange problem on his laptop

Whenever he tries to install or uninstall a program an error pops up that says:

Error 1402. Could not open key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run
Verify that you have sufficient rights ...

As far as he is concerned nothing strange has happened on the notebook to cause this problem.

Can anyone be of any help, please?

Just use regedt32, go to the key, right click permissions, and check if his user has Full Control permissions.

You might have to reregister the key or app associated with it.
Regsvr32 -filename in command line.
