Yes, today is April fools day and NVIDIA is debuting the GeForce 9800 GTX Graphics Processing Unit. Our coverage starts here with a look at EVGA's e-GeForce 9800 GTX.

And the GeForce 9800 GTX? In summary, after having tested the GeForce 9800 GTX under Windows XP, I will state that it performs on par with the previous generation GeForce 8800 GTX. That is until its 512MB of video memory (VRAM) becomes exhausted. Although not necessarily a drawback, it is a consideration that the informed consumer needs to realize before making a purchase - especially when two (SLI) or three (3-way SLI) graphics cards are being considered. The additional 256MB of video memory available on the GeForce 8800 GTX can make the difference between a game being playable or not

Will you be updating with SLI report soon Mike? Pretty much neck to neck with the 8800 GTX untill the resolution and AA is cranked up!
At $300 ....not a bad deal..but the 8800 GTX are hitting rock bottom pricing too.

btw Mike can you update the specs comparsion chart with the number of Texture Address Units for each GPU ? (i think 64 vs 32 ?) that seems the only interesting feature left out of the comparsion.
Any chance you could throw in the 8800GTS 512 so we can see how that plays vs this new card? Also a 3870 would be great as well. ^_^

Thanks but i was talking about the number of "Texture Address Units" not the number of texture filtering units.
AFAIK the number of TAUs has increased to the double in the G92 core as opposed to the G80.
the G80 has 32 TAUs while the G92 has 64. this must have helped the 9800GTX keep a strong position againest the 8800GTX i believe.

8800GTX is dropping in price pretty fast as well...seeing the cost so close to the 9800GTX.....one has to wonder...a bit of extra cost for a more 'future' proof product...which is kinda sad...considering that the 8800gtx has been out for a ridiculous time.

Can't you get a GT for about that in the US? A GT is a pretty big leap from a 7600GT. I started off with one of them when I got back in to PC's in late '06. It's still going strong in my mates kids PC. I remember it cost about £110, lolz. How things have changed, eh.
8800GTX is dropping in price pretty fast as well...seeing the cost so close to the 9800GTX.....one has to wonder...a bit of extra cost for a more 'future' proof product...which is kinda sad...considering that the 8800gtx has been out for a ridiculous time.
The 8800GTX can't be had for less than the 9800GTX at a few shops here. Both are now very good VFM. I'm holding out for next-gen now, it could be a long wait though.

Wow, that's so cheap. Especially with that cooler. Go for it, you'll love it, it's a great card. HTF have you lasted so long with your 7600GT with all the superb, cheap cards available?

I've only been using this 7600 GT (my wife's card) for a couple of weeks, since I finally rebuilt my rig. I sold my previous card, an eVGA 8800GTS 640MB KO ACS3 back in October. I haven't had my rig since, until now. So, I'm back in the market for a new card, just the funds are different this time around, unfortunately. :(

I never said the 8800GTX is cheaper than a 9800GTX, i said the price is getting close.

For someone who wants to buy a new gpu...it might be cheaper to buy a 8800GT now and wait for the next gpu from nvidia rather than dish out on a 9800GX2 or a 9800GTX.

Yep. I know, Gigabyte has one with the zalman cooler, and Evga has one with there customer cooler, but all of which are VERY VERY hard to get in Australia, and if you can find them, they are marked up waaay too much over the stock price which is pretty dam frustrating. I also don't want to order online for hardware like this because, they are bounce to have issues, and it will be alot harder to return/fix something like that compared to going into the store and talking with the guy..at least this way i know the person and it is a lot easier to get the problem resolved.

8800GTs are smoking fast and super cheap now. They are the best deal going until nVidia releases some truly worthy performing next gen cards.
Here's hoping for the 10x series.
