Well.... since I have been running a pair of 7800 GTX's for 2.5 years, I decided to make the jump and bought a pair of eVGA 9800GTX's from Microcenter yesterday.

WARNING: They are HUGE! I *barely* got them in my full-tower Koolance water-cooled case.

However.... not only is performace insanely better than my 7800's (running Half-Life 2: Ep 2 with all settings and AA/AF at max in 3840x1024 and never drop below 60 fps).... but the lower thermal conditions as discussed fully in the [H]ardOCP review is allowing them to be incredibly quiet even under full load.

I never experienced the 8800 series first hand... but I had waterblocks on my 7800's to keep noise to a minimum. I honestly don't know if I'll get blocks for these when they are eventually available as they are not needed from a noise perspective.

Although I can see why 8800GTX'ers don't need to upgrade for performance reasons... if you are looking for whisper-quiet top-end cards, I think you'll be happy with these.

I just installed mine and ya, the noise difference is noticeable, this thing is a lot quieter than my 8800GTS(640MB)

I was concerned about noise due to this.

Hmm well the OP didnt experiance the 8800's so this is kinda discouraging since i didnt expect it to be noisier than my 8800U ..

I keep my 640 at the default 60% and that's fine, inaudible over my case fans - I bet I'll be knocking on Zalman's door for a cooling solution within a week of having the 9800. ;)
