Tom Clancy's HAWX Flies into the Danger Zone
Ubisoft set to release a new air combat franchise this fall. First details and trailer.
by Hilary Goldstein
April 2, 2008 - Ubisoft and Tom Clancy games are like the peanut butter and chocolate of the games industry; the two go together naturally. Gamers who are already familiar with the Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six series have a new Tom Clancy game to consider this fall. Tom Clancy's HAWX (that's short for High-Altitude Warfare...X?) is flying onto PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall.

Developed by Ubisoft's Bucharest Studio, HAWX lets you pilot more than 50 planes in dogfights across the sky. Set in 2012, HAWX imagines a world that has become increasingly dependant on private military companies (PMCs). With PMCs increasingly gaining power, we sit on the precipice of a global conflict. Sounds like a good enough reason to hop in your fighter jet and shoot down some bogies.

HAWX features an Enhanced Reality System (ERS), which is meant to make even the average pilot feel like Iceman. ERS includes radars, incoming missile detection, an anti-crash system, damage control system, tactical map, information relay, weapons trajectory control and allows players to give commands to their AI squadron. With the Assistance Mode flipped on, the ERS will put pilots into a maximum safety mode. Think of it like having all the assists turned on in a racing game. You get more freedom and control with Assistance Mode off, but you will also be at greater risk without the full protection of the ERS.

Fortunately, you won't have to fight alone. HAWX supports four-player jump in co-op throughout the campaign. There is also a Vs. mode where up to 16 players can battle online for experience points and in-game cash, which is used to unlock new weapons.

Its ok if its not a flight sim, but it probably has a semblance of one if you turn off all the aids, and it does not even concern me one bit coz I am too shallow and easily distracted to be a flight sim purist. :D Nevertheless, its a must buy for me! It shure looks purty!

That shot looks amazing but I'll believe it when I see it. I would definitely like to know more about the engine being used and whether or not it will support AA or some kind of edge softener like Ghost Recon.

Looks awesome but it is Ubisoft, so I'll wait a week or 2 to see how many bugs there are before I buy it.

Its shame that over the years the PC flight genre has almost vanished so its great to see a game like this from a big publisher. Looks almost as good as Ace Combat, lets hope it plays like it.

I so hope it plays like Ace Combat! I love the series and so sad to see it not on the PS3. :(

If it looks and plays like ace 6 but has a story line I'll probably buy it. But if it doesn't feel like AC control wise, I dunno if I'd wanna play it or not. I've been playing the ace series for so long that other console flight games feel.. wrong. At first I was even kind of weirded out by playing 6 on an xbox controller.

I thought PMC stood for Private Military Contractor, not Company... O_o
