From my experiences lately with the latest service pack update for xp, i think its breaking things.
I installed the XP and amediatly went to SP3 and noticed when installing updates for office 2k3 and even Nero, things don't go well.
I can't even run MSconfig unless its in safe mode.
I ran xp for awhile with the first sp3 rc and it was ok played Crysis for hours and did stuff and was fine but things went south after running the last updat.
I don't know it its that or the stardock desktop suite causing it and even Daeman tools but i removed that.
ANother thing is when running the updates it would initialize updates and would just sit their after downloading the updates and before installation, it just sits their for hours doing nothing.
Even with Nero, it would go through the key set, languages, cusom install, and would copy files and than it would just sit their. I would go take a shower and comeback, and nero would just sit their doing nothing but showing a progress bar with no action going on.
Some stuff like the MOH Airborn to would be flaky also. i mentioned that in the gaming area.
Even when loading msconfig, it would run but i don't see nothing on the screen but it would show up in task manager but not using resources.
Yea its not hardware related cuz i ran this box for a few months now with no issues until i must of ran the last rc for sp3.
I also have 4 gigs or ram in the setup too which i thought would be the issue but i used it when using my setup for the last few months so not an issue their.
I done another format to see if something aint right but i did notice during setup when copying files and device detection, it would say error, unalble to install disk drives and cdroms.
but when i pulled the 2 gigs of ram, those errors went away so seting up apps and loading xp with the 4 gigs installed also could be an issue but like i said, i had 4 gigs or ram after loading everything before and it worked fine.
I did hear that during windows update, there are updates that can cause things to happen later when installing apps.
I checked hardware, drives, ram and all good. sl its either the 4 gigs or ram misbehaving or sp3 refresh causing strainge things.
