I first want to say for the life of XP I used Nero6 and loved it. Now I run Vista x64 and I need a new CD burning app.

I hear the new Nero8 is a bloated resource hog, so that does not interest me since I hate bloat. What other options do I have for a well supported CD/DVD burning app that works with Vista x64?

Nero8 isn't TOO bad, much better than 7, but still bloated. Perhaps try http://cdburnerxp.se/, works fine for me under Vista 64.

Nero 8 isn't bloated at all if you know how to do a custom install. Just unpick the things you don't need (practically everything) and its great.

That's true, athough I found, no matter what I did, it would always install the media home services. ::(:

I've been using imgBurn for the last year and it's great.

You can easily remove it by running services.msc and disabling NMIndexingService... Plus unregister MediaLibraryNSE.dll library:

cd "\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Nero\Lib"
regsvr32 /u MediaLibraryNSE.dll

And it is gone :) Nero 8 is a wonderful software, especially w/ BD/HD plugin (adds BD playback and authoring for $30).

Yepo CDBurnerXP does all you really need to do to burn data\audio discs.

plus have to disable 2 or 3 programs from start up.

BD authoring still needs a lot of work, only does interlaced :thumbdwn:

So CDBurnerXP works in Vista x64? Does it handle images and have a straight-forward GUI like Nero does? Oh, an ddoes it burn DVDs too?

I don't have experience with CDBurnerXP, but like I said before, imgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/) is all you need. And the new version added a bunch of stuff to make it more user friendly. Before you had to kinda know how it worked. Now you just press the big "Burn Image" button. It works flawlessly in vistax64 (I'm using it) and will burn images, make images, burn regular data, etc. It doens't have any fancy video or music burning modes, but if you don't need that...it perfect.

I think I may be sold on ImgBurn. Last question regarding it though, how do you apply updates for it? Does it have a built in updater? Install new version over existing version, or uninstall old first and then install the new version?

Thanks so much folks!

Haha, so I started it up to see if there was a check for updates option, and right when it started it notified me there was a new version available. It takes you to the website where you download the new version. Then just install it; it updates your current install and keeps your settings. I just did it and the whole process took maybe 30 seconds. The program is only 2MB so it's a quick download :D

Ahh yeah, forgot about that! ... theres also something called "Nero Home" that i usually stop from booting in the system startup.

nero home is tied with nero scout, nero home can be setup to stream media from pc to ps3 somehow. nero really should stop sneaking in scout and home installs

They should.

Nero Home does stream media to consoles and other PC using a method called Transcoding. Basically it takes any media and converts it on the fly into a format the receiving device can use. It's works well, but there are a few better solutions out there (TVersity and it's free). In fact both the PS3 and 360 support enough formats you can almost do away with it altogether.

Well I installed ImgBurn and I'll be danged if that ain't the most unuser-friendly software I have ever seen. I still havene;t managed to successfully burn a disc yet.

I like Cyberlink Power2Go 6 as well, it is not as "heavy" as Nero 8, and can burn BD/HD-DVD as well:
http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_24_ENU.html

Not bad for $40.

It can also convert and burn MP3 DVDs, which is just perfect for my car audio (you can fit more than 100 albums on standard DVD-9) - http://reviews.cnet.com/JVC_KD_AVX33/4660-6729_7-6785290.html

....are you serious? Did you click on the "Burn Files/Folders to disk" Button? The HUGE one that is one of the six on the startup page? Then did you add files to your disk using the "Browse for folder" or "Browse for file" buttons? Then did you click burn?!?!? The big HUGE button at the bottom?

I don't understand how you couldn't have successfully burned a disk...Do you mean you've tried but burned coasters? Or YOU just can't figure it out? It's not rocket science. My 12 year old bro could figure it out in a matter of minutes.

I did all of the above and though it said it completed successfully, my disc was unreadable. Who knows, but there are just a crap-load of options with ImgBurn that aren't straight forward.

You don't need to change any options. If you started changing them, that's probably why it didn't work. Just use it as it comes. It works fine.
