I'm assuming they would have already beaten the protection by being able to rip it at all, right? Wouldn't you only need Blu-Ray playback software at that point?

AnyDVD breaks the BD+ encryption, so, ya - you should be fine.

You may not even need AnyDVD depending on where/how you "download" this movie.

You'll need something like PowerDVD Ultra to play it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AnyDVD will only break the copy protection, it's not a playback codec. You'd need some sort of software that'll play BluRay. Not sure how this would even work if you don't have a BluRay drive, virtual or otherwise.

You do not need AnyDVD (HD). If your GPU + monitor support HDCP over DVI-D, you will get full 1080p support. You need AnyDVD only if you want to get rid of HDCP protection (e.g. when using 2560x1600 resolution where HDCP is not supported for most LCDs), or some other BD/DVD/CD/HDDVD protections, but it is not *required* for playback.

What you *do* need though is PowerDVD 7/8 and/or Nero ShowTime with Blu-ray / HD DVD Video plug-in to play BD movies.

Most good BD recorders ship w/ Cyberlink HD Suite though, which has PowerDVD 7 OEM in it (usually only stereo sound though). You can upgrade from PowerDVD 7 OEM to PowerDVD 8 ULTRA for $75 (that is what I did). Full price is $100.

If you already have Nero 8, BD plugin will cost you $30, and the player is very good as well (altough not as good as PowerDVD 8); this will enable also BD authoring in Nero 8 Suite, so it is a very good deal:

after anydvd is done with the movie, HDCP is not needed.

only thing needed for playback the movie is

any directdraw players (something like WMP11), latest version of FFDshow(free), AC3 Filter(free) and Haali Media Splitter(free).

Note: that if TrueHD(BS) or EAC3 is primary audio stream, AC3 Filter will not be able to decode it. AC3 has to be primary audio stream (steam order can be changed with tsmuxer)
Thats all, and you can playback the movies.

I have GGW-H20L, PowerDVD Ultra has bad picture quality compared to WMP11 with FFDshow.

Does it run OK on Vista x64?

there is 32bit ffdshow and 64bit ffdshow(hard to find).

on 64bit vista, default media player is 32bit WMP11, if you want to use WMP11 then 32bit ffdshow will do. if you want to switch to 64bit WMP11 and or use Media Center (only 64bit) you will have to find 64bit ffdshow.

Vista codec pack is probably the best codec pack, it contains all that is necessary, and nothing more, no pirated codecs or software.

k-lite codec pack and many other are full of pirated software and codecs, plus install a lot of unnessary crap.

Vista codec pack main package is 32bit, and if you have 64bit vista you would install vista codec pack x64 component(contains the latest version of 64bit ffdshow).

The problem I find with many codec packs is confilcting codecs causing problems. There is a good one recommended on the VideoLan site.

Cheers for the info though.

that the good thing about vista codec pack, is very lean it only contains codecs that do not cause issues, and only ones that you need.

when it comes to codecs the less you have the better, also is good idea to disable extra codecs. Don't have 3 active codecs for mpeg2, don't have xvid, divx, divx from powerdvd all active at the same time.

gspot is a great tool that allows you to set merit to all codecs and splitters to disable them.
