Hi guys. Not real tech savvy and need recommendation.

Older system:

Dell 8400

intel 925x chipset
Pentium 4 w/ Hyper Threading 3.0 GHz
PCI Express x 16 (Not PCIe 2.0)
2 GB Mem DDR 2 running at 533 MHz
SATA 7200 RPM HDD

Win XP Pro

20" lcd, not widescreen, would like to run resolutions of 1280x1024 up to 1600x1200

Principally playing Oblivion right now.

Should I get the evga 8800gts 320MB for $115 or 9600gt 512MB for $150? SLI is not an option either way.

let me know if I need to provide more info.

Thanks!

pfj

Welcome :)

I'd say the 9600GT. Quite alot better performance wise and more memory. Not sure but I think i'll use less power, too.

Your CPU will hold you back, but on the other hand you can still take the card with you if you upgrade in the future. The 9600GT is the better option, as stated, it draws less juice, AFAIK about 40W less power than 8800GTS (G80).

Where do you get the decreased power info? I know the 9600 is a smaller die chip, but they both require 400 watts. I'm not challenging your statement, I would just like to know the source so I can see for myself.

Found this review.

Shows the 8800 GTS beating the 9600 GT slightly. Regardless, I picked up a 9600 GT Superclocked (675 MHz vs the standard 650 Mhz as tested in above link) for $170 AR. Made my decision mainly because of decreased power requirements (and resulting heat output) and the very good SLI performance of the 9600 GT (in case I upgrade the rest of the comp later, I can at least salvage a vid card, as suggested).

Unfortunately, I already have a 8800 GTS 320MB on its way from Newegg, so gots to sell that one!

Will post some performance numbers later. Just for kicks.

Anecdotally, Oblivion is a whole new game :)

Thanks, guys.

According to Xbitlabs (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gainward-bliss9600gt-512gs_7.html#sect0), the 9600GT draws about 60W under 3D load. My 8800GTS 640MB draws a bit over 100W. We can also see that's the case for the G92 8800GTS, it's close.
