I'd like to start by saying i'm not wanting this software for pirating.

Ive bought a BluRay player a few days ago and started to purchase some BluRay films. My problem is, discs have a very short life span in my house due to kids getting hold of them, etc, and i'm wanting to back them up on my HD. But due to their huge size (20-25Gb) i'm wanting some compression software to make them smaller with as little loss of quality as possible and with 5.1 sound. Any recommendations?

start off with:

tsmuxer (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/tsMuxeR) to strip out any un-needed audio/subtitles etc...
eac3to (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/eac3to) if it has some weird new audio stream to convert to the standard AC3

with tsmuxer save the file in TS format

use autoMKV (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=automkv&s=&orderby=Name&hits=50&convert=&dvdauthorfeatures=) to convert, convert it to either X264 or WVC1

autoMKV can be a bit complicated, i'm still trying to figure out what all the options do. But is very good program

I don't think autoMKV works with Bluray. It doesn't see the files in the 'Stream' folder :(

thats why i said that you have to use tsmuxer to create .ts files. m2ts won't work
