View Full Version : Discreet Volume Control.
I use World Time, for among other reasons it has settings to chime the hour, etc. and sounds like a grandfather clock. The problem is that it has no volume control of it's own and I have to keep turning it off, because it is too loud when playing movies on PowerDVD, even though I set Cyberlink at full volume and turn down the system volume. Probably not, but I got to wondering if there is any software that could be installed that would be able to control the volume of another app, without changing the system volume?

If you use Vista, it allows volume control per app. Just click the sound icon, then click "mixer". If you are using XP, then... I dunno. ::(:
It is XP. You have given me the first reason that I have heard to upgrade to Vista...but I'm not ready for that yet.

Best not to rush. You'll know when you are ready. Trust me, you'll know...

I loved the 'Start' bar Vista introduced. It's awesome. Much easier than the Program Manager I was used to with 3.11.

I know your joking but in all honesty I still liked the layout of program manager better than the start bar. You could orgranize everything into categories, and you didn't have to click through 20 things to try to find what you are looking for. The only problem is that with a window open you'd have to minimize it to open another program.

Maybe MS should do a retro/gaming OS. Cut all the crap, but at the same time bring back some things from DOS/3.11 just for fun. I don't mean kernels and the like, just cosmetic stuff.
Here is a thread that I just came across:
http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=35571
I'm curious what the response would be here? To summarize, it says that Vista is bloated and slow due to DRM, Media Center. Gaming Center, etc. That thread has gotten me interested in 2k8.

vista and server 2008 is the same thing, there are no major differences.
From what I read, they have the same kernel, but vast differences in what they are loaded with.

that is partially true, but saying one has more DRM it total lie
Read this article and see what you think:

Any benchies floating around that focus on gaming performance. I mean, who uses a PC for productivity these days. That's what consoles are for.

wroth the price and works brilliantly
(note: nothing to do with indiana jones)
Thanks. That appears to be exactly what I was looking for. I just downloaded the trial, but won't be able to test it for a few days, because I'm about to do major surgery on my PC.

I finally got around to installing IndieVolume yesterday and tried playing a couple of movie DVDs today, but everytime that a DVD is started, it runs the wave volume down to zero and it has to be adjusted in Windows volume control before being able to hear anything.
Though I like the concept very much, this problem makes it a bit too much of a hassle to pay the purchase price for. I'm awaiting a reply from the author, and I also took a look at the support forum (oxymoron), but it was almost nonexistant in terms of activity, except a number of complaints, which never had any response to. The jury is still out, but it isn't looking good.

works fine for me
wysiwyg,
I see that you are dual boot both XP and Vista...does IndieVolume work on both OSs for you? At the moment, I'm using MCE but that should work the same as XP.
I'm not certain, but I'm beginning to think that the copyright problem that I posted in another thread is also due to IndieVolume, but I won't know until I uninstall it.

No. Have you seen Pysol?
I just uninstalled IndieVolume and laid it to rest. I still don't know that it had anything to do with the copyright problem in WMP, because it still remains, but it didn't start until IndieVolume was installed.
What I do know is that IndieVolume's demise fixed the problem with the system volume's wave volume going to zero, and a problem that prevented World Time from being able to access any files on the computer to disappear. Like some old automobiles that that went to an early grave, IndieVolume should follow the same destiny. It is a very good idea, and if the author can ever get rid of the bugs...or someone else produces a better product, then I will try again. Therefore, if anyone knows of something else, I'm all ears.
