Been poking around with my Vista computer this weekend i've got a few questions for you fine folks. :)

My Vista MCE Box specs:
CPU: Intel C2D E6750 @ stock speed
MEM: 4GB DDR2 800mhz
MB: Asus P5K
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate x64 (not SP1 yet)
Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-500

1. How do you get xvid to play on xbox 360?
Ok, i did google on this and i found tons of applications claiming this and that. But they all more or less had one thing in common, XP MCE 2005 *required* ! Whats up with that?
I'm talking Transcode (http://runtime360.com/projects/transcode-360/), VME etc..

So i found tversity (http://tversity.com/download/), and it seemed cool but had just one problem with that. I have a MCE and it records all my TV shows and stuff, i want my xbox 360 connected to that and not connected to some streaming server and ever time i want to watch recorded shows to reconnect the xbox to the mce computer. So that was a big not-what-i-had-in-mind. Oh and btw, a little warning about Transcode for Vista users. It's very buggy right now. If you install it, as is right now, it will crash on start up and if you try to uninstall it it will just state you need to close it down prior to uninstall problem is, it's not runing :( On the forum this is a documented bug and they suggest users to download the xp version and well.. to make this short.. xp download url is broken, so much for that help :)

2. How do you get rid of the dreadful never ending hard drive read/write vista behavior?
Before when i was using XP MCE 2005 when the MCE wasn't doing anything (recording movies or runing optimizations) things were quite. But now with Vista it never stops. Anything you can disable to make this get a bit closer to "normal" again? ;)

3. Vista MCE standby issue
Before with XP MCE 2005 when the MCE was idle for some time the computer went down to standby mode and would awake itself if it had to record a tv show or if i clicked on the remote. But in Vista the MCE computer is on 24/7.. maybe it could be connected with my other problem above. Anyone else had issues with standby in Vista MCE?

1. Try TVersity (http://tversity.com/home) Will transcode almost any format on the fly to 360, PS3 in fact anything. Very easy to setup and get going.

2. Basically it's indexing your PC. It should stop after a while, if not turn off indexing and Superfetch (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/11/30/disable-and-turn-off-vista-superfetch/?ref=%C4%B0lkSexShop.Com).

3. I have this issue too. Haven't found a fix. I have set it to turn off HDDs after 15-30mins, that works, not sure what stops if from going into standby. Perhaps wake on LAN and/or USB?

Hey Crainger

1. TVersity I already tried but the problem is how do i get the xbox 360 to connect to both Vista MCE and TVersity in a convenient way? I had to remove unregister the MCE connection and then connect to TVersity to use it but then I had no MCE anymore. Or maybe I did something wrong there?

2. It never stops, or atleast there's always new stuff to index then. I'll try turn those things off.

3. It used to work at the begining. I think it all stopped when i connected my xbox as an extender. One of these days i'll reinstall and see where it stops working.

Ah. That's right. Yeah the 360 wont access TVersity and MCE together. ::(: I'll see what else I can come up with.

not to be mean or anything, but have you considered building an HTPC and just sharing the files over the network or even recording directly to the HTPC? sure, it would cost a little extra money, but it would save you a LOT of hassle.

Not sure if i could get that accepted by the gov (read wife) :P

1 Server in the closet room
1 HTPC in the living room
2 gaming PC in the living room
3 laptops all over the place
1 PS2 in the living room
1 Xbox 360 in the bedroom

But I like the idea! Just one thing. I like having all my TV shows recorded at one place and one place only, so i can easily access them from the bed room. If i put in another HTPC in the bed room, i won't be able to access the content on the htpc in the living room in a convenient way. I would have to have both a HTPC and a Xbox360/mediaextender to make it work. I haven't seen a software based media extender. Is there such a program?

See my problem here? :)

i would get 1 TB of NAS (dont get WD, from what i hear you cant store media files on them) and record all shows to the NAS device. then you can open the files from any pc on the network :)
