I believe you are having this problem because you have 4G ram, I am having the same problem... others are reporting this too. Just for test pull out 2 gigs and try nvidia driver + X. Also you may check your bios and toggle memory remap option (if exist).
Thanks for info!
I switched Memory remap in BIOS to off - and vualya, nvidia driver work in FreeBSD with 4Gb ram.
But i lost 768Mb ram (amount onboard ram on 8800GTX) in Vista and MacOS (both 64-bit).
I also tryed 169.12 and 173.08 drivers with PAE kernel and Memory remap on - no luck, machine reboots at starting X.

Hi.. GoodmornignI was just passing thorugh the htread ans I saw that you too has eperience the same problem as miine.. have you tried using a different nvidia card? I hope that this can help you, i advice you to go to Nvidia.com and you will find the answer for your problem.. it is where I found the solution to mine.
You need to disable your memory to 2GB, run 64 bit FreeBSD, or put this in /boot/loader.conf:
machdep.disable_mtrrs="1"

I am now experiencing the same problem for days now and I am so angry because I have tried search the net for better solution and I am glad that you have given me ideas.. I will try to follow your suggestions and I will let you know if it is effective... One more thing a friend told me that it also has the same effect when it comes to other drivers.
Thanks for info!

I switched to 2 Gig Ram, still, not seeing the whole memory capacity.. Still, a great workaround for the problem..

When you say that your Nvidia driver hangs machine do you also means that it also automatically reboots the computer?.. I am experiencing that right now and I don't know what to do.. you see I am not an IT expert and I am planning to call for an expert but before I do that I want to have some clue on what is happening to my PC.

Well, for me, here is what he is trying to say.. Whenever a game would load, or an application, it automatically freezes, and the only way to solve that problem is to manually restart or reboot the computer for the system unit itself. I too, have experienced, this and have noticed that my graphics card did not meet the game requirements..

To Roman_gertz: Thank you for answering the question of the previous commentator.. I was wondering the same way that he or she was doing. :) I still have some queries about the subject because I replaced the video card and still my computer is still the same.

If that's the case, then just bring it to a technician.. It is better to have an expert look at that, rather than just try to fix it yourself..

Hmm, any updates on this one? I believe there are new drivers today - also, perhaps it might not be the driver itself.. The hardware might be malfunctioning..
