Only an idiot would buy a GTX 280 before seeing the ATI offerings. Seriously if performance is close and pricing isn't Nvidia is gonna lose alot of sales. Go ATI - glad to see them back in the game. The HD 4850 @ $189 looks really good to me. Water cooled and OC'd I bet it would be a really nice performer.

Why is it that a card with 256bit memory bus and only 512MB ram is performing so good against GTX / Ultra with more memory and bigger buses? Is ATI somehow using that memory more effectively?

well GTX 280 is only for people who have 30" and still want to use max AA, since then ATI loses due to lower videoram, but otherwise .. well im speechless :)

Sure are, why would you run out and buy them before the seeing what the competition has?? And the people that bought 3 x GTX 280s are just absolute fools. But whatever, as the saying goes - "A fool and his money will soon part..."

EVGA should release a GTX 280 Parted Edition for the early adopters.

I think anyone who has triSLI with 280's is on a safe bet unless ATI CF for 3 X2 cards.

Says the fudzilla.

They've been pretty good of late.

Actually, the benchmarks I've seen at B3D have put a dual R700 Quadfire set up equal to GTX 280 tri-sli.

I figured id just sell mine for like 500 or something when the 4870x2s come out.

When is the 4870X2 coming out, August or Fall?

Well it's a hard choice for me this time since any new card I am gonna buy cannot be a 512MB card so 4870 and 4870X2 are both out of the question upon release unless AIBs come up with 1GB versions and the card performs good in situations where its performance is not hindered by its memory size.

AoC climbs up to 740 and CoX climbs up tp 700Mb memory usage for me after playing for several hours and zoning in different areas at 19x12 w/highest possible AA/AF and detail settings. Whether it's due to inefficient programming or not I need that much (or greater) Vram on a card to even consider it a candidate for my next upgrade.

And it's not that hard to see that nVIDIA will make a 55nm GDDR5 variant of GT200. They may do it sooner than later if 4870X2 turns out to be faster than GTX280 (in canned maximum 10-15minute tests performed by review sites) to the extent that makes nV release the GT200b card sooner than planned and jump on making another X2 card with two GT200b chips. And yea I am not gonna fall for any Quad crap or Tri horse **** from either side anytime soon though I have every reason to do so (19x12 res must have AA/AF)

Crossfire Benchmarks
Temperatures:
Idle: 68-70C
Load: 79-81C
(The slightly lower temperatures can be explained that we mounted more fans in the overall setup, while the single card only had one fan blowing into it)

3DMark Vantage:

GPU: 11390
CPU: 15913

3DMark '06:

World In Conflict Benchmark:
1280 x 1024 (4x AA, 4x AF) @ Very High: 51 avg, 26.3 min, 118.3 max
1600 x 1200 (4x AA, 4x AF) @ Very High: 48 avg, 26 min, 112 max

Other Notes:
The fan seems to run pretty slowly as well, which would explain the higher temperatures, even with a dual slot cooler. Taking out the PWM fan control blue pin from the fan connector lets the fan run at 100%, which is very loud but also takes a lot of the temperature off.

Coming Soon:
Quad Hybrid Crossfires with 2x HD4850s and 2x HD4870s with a Phenom 9950. :)
