Every security update, every patch where you need to recompile. Every kernel update (biggest thing). Incompatibilities on kernels, on libraries. Libraries not being found even though I just compiled the files (nfnetlink_queue). ./configure failing, make failing, libtool not adding the library files correctly.

General nuances: updating apache? well, you may as well update php too, well your updating php, probably should update mysql for the new libraries. there goes 45 minutes. I wouldn't test RPM files with my life. Don't get me started with selinux.

The main reason for linux imo is a stable server environment. This is very true, it is indeed stable, but jeesh, I think I'll change to windows next time i order a dedicated box.

Oh ya, its redhat rhel 5 - meh. I think im going to go ritualistically cut myself. . . . ^_^

I'm sure if you have physical access, its a lot easier than just using ssh to do everything.

Recompiling to update on REL?

Sure, man, whatever.

The moment you call ./configure for security updates you need to go back RTFM.

So? You should have binaries for your distribution.

I don't see people complain about the fact that they have to compile their Windoze updates ;)

Well, if all you do is game then, yes. But for everything out side of gaming it is rather usefull.

Trying running Ubuntu 7.10 or even the 8.04 Beta. You'll be surprised how functional and easy to use it really is. ;)

Windows truly suck, doesn't it?

Windows truly suck, doesn't it?

Windows does suck, but not nearly as much as know-it-all Linux users.

The ONLY place I ever see the term "RTFM" is in Linux circles.

How can you be so ignorant? If Linux would be everyone's OS, "no one" would know Windows, and would be told to RTFM. So it (would) go both ways.

Of course it's a legitimate answer many times.

Linux is free. No one messes with my PC, it's MINE. DRM prevents you from playing back your files on whatever you want. Windows is married with DRM down hard.. no way I'm putting Vista on my PC ever. I'll be on Linux (and happy because everything just works out of the box, no need to fiddle with warez and extra programs to do stuff) until Windows 7, and then see if that's worth "getting".

I bet I have posted more than 5000 times in replies to helping someone with their linux install in various forums, and I never have said that.

You just aren't on the right forums Q ;)

Been a while since we've had a good Lin vs Win thread on the boards.

It could wait a while longer imho.

You've never tried to get SLi working with the GF8+ series, have you? So much for "Linux" working out of the box...

Though, I must add, for every *other* piece of hardware in my rig it was detected instantly and worked flawlessly. The only issue I ever had was getting the drivers for my GF8 cards and SLi to work properly.

That's NVIDIA's fault, not Linux'.

But when drivers don't work in Windows, that's suddenly MS's fault? Both OS have their upsieds, and they also have their short-commings. Which one really is better all boils down to preference, and nothing more.

Err, no? Where did I say that?

It all depends on what the computer will be doing. You won't set up a Linux PC to be an AD server in a Windows network (although, you could). And you wouldn't want to run a http/ftp/anything really on a Windows server. Oh, what's that you say? A windows update? Oh, it requires a reboot? Aww, how cute.

I'm sorry that you don't understand the severity of this, but a reboot should never occur on a server...

Aroused? You have a sick mind...

LOl, Ok.

From one Linux user to another..this thread was posted as a vent only. No major business decisions or build or troubleshooting issues are being covered here. I was keeping it light in an attempt to keep the peace.

You are obviously above all that. ;)

Peace, and have a nice life.
