AVG Free 8.0 (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe)
I've installed it over top of AVG 7.5 on two XP machines and so far so good. They cleaned up the interface a bit. So far it's caught something 7.5 didn't..

Thanks for the heads up, I was wondering when they'd release a free version of 8.0.

Supports and runs on Vista x64 just fine.

Couple of issues: The Link Scanner can slow down browsing. Watch a Google search result page and it will scan all your results. Can be disabled, though.
Also, has integrated Anti-Spyware which can't be disabled.

Yup, works in vista x64 just fine. Don't even need to download a special version.
I also don't like the Link Scanner feature....it has crashed firefox on me a couple of times now.
I always turn off any automated functions with any anti-virus software I use. I hate real-time scanning of any kind. Common sense, manually scanning individual files, and a weekly manual system scan are all I need to stay safe.

Ah ,Thats why that happened.
Maybe a different ff version wont crash.

With this new version, does it effect overall system performance any? I have 4 gigs of ram in all my units so not wurried about that.

LOL, this actually makes it even worse in my eyes. I mean, how can you tout an anti virus that cannot detect a virus unltil a next version hits? Kind of lame, don't you think?
In my day, upgrade of AV would only concern interface/usability/bugfixes, not heuristics. That's what dfinitions update is for.

If you're not worried .... why ask? Lol.
I haven't noticed any performance differences. Other than the Link Scanner feature slowing down google searches and crashing firefox...but I disabled that so it's all good.
I am running it (see sig) runs like a champ. Download it, run it, Done!!

So any word on whether is new version is better than Avast? I switched from AVG to Avast sometime ago. Just wondering if it's safe to go back?? ::D:
I dont have it on..but i am guessing you have the UI open. When you close the UI it does take significant less amount of ram.
IE Windows Live Messenger and Kaspersky AV

Anyone know how to get rid of the little exclamation point in the tray icon if you have the Link Scanner turned off ("AVG Search-Shield" component unchecked)?

Looks like you can install without the LinkScanner if you want:
How to install AVG without LinkScanner
If you wish to install AVG 8.0 Free Edition without the LinkScanner component, or uninstall this component from your program, please proceed as follows:
* Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
* Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
o type
c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch
* The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component. (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338#faq_1338)
EDIT: Worked like a charm!
