I've always unchecked the NVIDIA forceware drivers from the system configuration on startup. Is it okay, or does it really make a difference? Knowing is better then not knowing....

The Symantec crap you have running at startup will probably do more harm than the nvidia apps. :D

lol very true. I leave the nvidia apps running just in case they are doing something. The impact on system startup performance is nothing. Symantec/Norton crap on the other hand will slow down your pc to a ridiculous level.

Okay, so if the Norton Anti-Virus crap is going to slow down my PC, what if I unchecked it on startup? Won't I be without Anti-Virus protection? It's Symantec Norton Anti-Virus corp. Edition x64 for Windows Vista Ultimate x64. If unchecked, how will I be protected from viruses?

don't lisen to them, norton corp stuff is not bad. if you manage to get Symanted Endpoint Protection, it replaces the Symantec Client Security, very low on resources.

Is that already included in the version I'm using by chance?

well Norton is known for being quite a resource hog compared to some of the other popular avs. maybe their most recent version is better I haven't tried it in a couple of years.

Okay, thank you! this is great news!!! but under Symantec Endpoint Protection x64 version of the software which did you choose to install?

Install Symantec Endpoint Protection: Installs endpoint to unmanged computers.

Or did you choose

Install Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager: Installs the management server and console??

Which option did you choose to install?

One of those processes adds nVidia to the Windows Shell, i.e. you can go to the nVidia Control Panel by right-clicking on the desktop. Not sure what everything else does.

nekrosoft13, great find on the Symantec Endpoint Protection software...thank you! It's much better then the stand alone Symantec Norton Anti-Virus software corp. Edition x64. Will it update automatically or will I have to do it manually?

Just let it run if you have enough RAM, who cares about 10-20MB these days.

And Norton is rubbish, most horrible product i've ever seen. ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 is just so much better, not only with resources but with cleaning as well. And it's cheaper too.

Having a lot of startup programs affect the boot speed and has nothing to do with the ram usage. :) Vista boot takes about ~25 seconds for me.

Same here, but lets face it like this: how many times to you startup your PC? I once or twice a day sometimes more but thats it, wasting time to tune a few secs of the startup time costs more time then waiting that few seconds longer(nana2)

Off topic.....

nekrosoft13, do you have Vista 64 installed? And if you do, do you have the option to do a virus scan of folders/files via right click? I had Norton Internet Security 2008 installed, worked great, but the scan for viruses via right click was missing with Vista 64.

I do once a day, but I computer is much more zippier for it. I think. Probably a placebo effect, though, lol. Start up programs can cause issues with other programs, too, and are hard to pinpoint because they ALWAYS start.

While we are on this topic, I found out that freaking using MCE for your TV Tuning adds 8 bloody processes! HOLEY ****E! Ignoring Firefox, I have 57 processes open. Weird, I used to get 49. Got some clean-up to do! :D

~Ibrahim~

P.S. Boot up time with my short-stroked 640GB has cut down a ton from my old Seagate 320GB.

I use this and have ever sense Vista was released
http://www.kaspersky.com/

It has very little impact on my system performance and does a great job.

If you do decided to switch to Kaspersky be sure that you check out how to totally remove Norton from your system. I believe that is on there forums some where, sorry it's been a long time that I had to do that.

Norton is rubbish, please use something proper like ESET of Kaspersky. Both are cheaper too.
I suggest ESET (I use it myself as well), but Kaspersky isn't bad either.

Yes, you think but it doesn't care at all. My boottimes are rather high at my main desktop too because I use a rather old 250GB disk for Windows, Apps and Games. But I don't care at all if Windows boots 10 sec longer and if a map takes bit longer to load at a game (Even though my 250GB is rather old, I'm almost everytime first people to drive away @ TrackMania). More RAM helps more to improve startup time and other timings :D
