Updating xbox 360

I don' have my xbox360 connected to the internet, other side of the house for me and don't use it enough to pay the online account fee, is there a way I can update it, firmware or otherwise without an internet conenction. I have the 20gb hard drive...

Can I download a sp or something like it online , then copy it to a usb drive, then run it from the hd?

You can download the update from microsoft http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/systemupdates.htm and burn it to dvd, then your 360 will update from it.

Oh one other thing my brother mod'd the thing about a year, I didn't want him to but did it anyways, will this potentially mess anything up...not even sure what the mod does, I think we can play backed up games on it...

I just want it ready so when I buy gta4 tomorrow I can play it...

i believe that the update may disable the ability to join XBL, but i do not believe that it will brick the system.

here's an old article but MS will be doing the same thing for all updates. cant really blame em, theyre just doing it to protect the game companies.
