Gateway P-172X FX (http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668034.php)

Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 45nm 2.4GHz 800MHz FSB 3MB L2
4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 667
Nvidia 8800M GTS 512MB
17in 1920x1200 LCD
320GB (160GB x 2 RAID 0) 7200rpm
Intel PM965 chipset
Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit
finger print reader, webcam, hdmi, mic etc...

$1949 w/ 1yr warranty, w/o office suite, and w/o norton.

Ideally I'd like to upgrade to Vista Ultimate 64, and a Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz 800MHz FSB 6MB L2), I think I can call up customer support and get those changes made.

Gateway defintely wasn't my first choice, but this laptop is one of the few that offers 4GB standard and an 8800. Specs look great for the price unless I'm missing something, so any reasons why it wouldn't be a good buy? Any others that are comparable?

I looked at Dell, Alienware, Voodoo, Falcon, HP, and Toshiba for something with a 45nm C2D, 8700M or better, 1920x1200 LCD, 200GB+ 7200rpm HDD, and 4GB ram for $2500 or less. Most offered only the 8600M GS/GT, and didn't have 45nm support and came with 2GB or less ram and 160GB or less storage space for about $2000. 8800M GTX/ SLI configs were offered for $2800 or more, and even it didn't have 4GB standard, only as a $350 upgrade. This would have forced me to buy 4GB myself for $90 or so and void the warranty.

I'd like alot of the comforts of my desktop (speed in vista, games, file transfers) with relative portablity, but spending $3000+ isn't really an option because I won't be using it THAT much.

Very nice. It'd probably suck a battery dry rather quickly though.

I bought the P-6860 fx and can tell you, that you get far less than the 2 hours the battery is supposed to last.

If its costing you a lot I'd sack the RAID 0 HDDs and just get one. It'll save your battery life so much as well...

The prices and options look pretty nice, do you have personal experience with them?

Does your P-6860 have a 9 cell battery? some of the other P series seem to only have 6 cell.

I admit the RAID array is a bit excessive, I don't even have one in my desktop, unfortunately gateway doesn't allow much change in configuration :( If I want only one drive I have to drop the processor to a 2GHz 65nm T5750 and drop the resolution to 1440x900.

Why would you want a 17-inch laptop? I travel a lot, so a 17-inch is just too bulky and heavy for my taste.

A 1680x1050 15.4in would be ok, but most of them don't offer anything better than an 8600M GT. The 17in models are considered enthusiast and are pretty much the only ones that offer better cards, at decent prices atleast. I'm not really traveling that much, just that when I do I'd like the ability to take my games with me, like CoD4 and Stalker. I know several people with Go 7600's that got them before the 8 series were available and they can't play Oblivion or even CSS at decent quality. I don't plan on playing at native resolution, but atleast 1280x800 or 1440x900 for games and I want the extra desktop space for browsing and general use.
