What do you guys think of the 8600M GT?
Anyone had any experience?

I'm thinking of changing laptops and I was thinking of the Dell XPS M1530 due to the fact you can get a 8600M GT on it. Say 2GB (at least) of RAM and a 2GHz Core2Duo processor.
It's by no means a high end gaming rig, but I think it would suffice my needs whenever I get a hankering for FPS... other that that, i have an xbox360 to keep my gaming addiction at bay.

The alternative is a smaller, more portable M1330 with an 8400 GS 128MB gpu, which I wouldn't really use at all for gaming.

I'm a computer/systems engineering major, so I'm on my computer most of the time. I take my current lappy to school everyday, so that's why I'm doubting the M1530. I'd only get it if the 8600mGT is worth the added size/weight.

What do you guys think/recommend?

I have one in my Macbook Pro and it's a good enough GPU. I haven't tried playing Crisis with it but it handles all of the Valve/Steam games fine at 1440x900.

The 8600M isn't that bad. It plays the games I usually play when I'm on the laptop just fine. (WoW, Guild Wars, HL2:ep2) The framerates are great but they aren't that bad either. It's playable.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720. Got it for a pretty good price.

yeah as long as you stick to res. no greater than 1280x1024
and can live with maybe turning some details down to medium(on the newer
and yet to be released titles) then it's absolutely fine!

I just got a HP with a 8600 GT M and a C2D @ 1.83GHz. I just ran the CS:S stress test at a rez of 1440x900 with everything set at max detail. I got 101 FPS. Not bad at all. I'm going to play some TF2 on it later tonight.

update: Been playing TF2 on this for a while. Ran perfect and I was not even getting any lag on this integrated wireless N adapter.

I've got a laptop with an 8600M GS which is probably half the speed of the GT I guess(?) and it plays Call of Duty 2 MP levels at 1440x900 on high pretty well; I haven't tried any other games though.

Thanks for the input guys.
I'm not really a graphics wh0re, but I want games to look relatively nice at acceptable frame rates.

Has anyone tried Crysis on a 8600GT yet? I think that's basically the holy grail of all performance tests.

I played the Crysis demo on a 7900GS and it was slow but playable at medium settings at 1024x768. The 8600GT is a little slower than the 7900GS. The 8600GT mobile is slower than that... so, expect to be playing with low settings in Crysis.

should be able to play crysis at medium with a resolution of 1280x720 decently. Just make sure you have a decent CPU and RAM backing it.

Yeah, I want to have at least 2gb of ram and a 2 Ghz processor. 1.8 at the least.

I bought this a couple of months ago:

but you may have a hard time finding it in stock now since it's being replaced by:

Both have the 8800M GTS and it totally rocks, not to even mention the price!

Those look pretty sweet, but unfortunately 17" is too big to carry around.
I take my current laptop to school every day. 15.4" is the limit, and that's because the Dell XPS M1530 is pretty light and compact for a 15".

I'm thinking I just might go with a Dell XPS M1330 and just stick to gaming on my 360. To be honest, I now use my computer more for work than play. Plus, it's harder to sell a 15" in the near future.

I think I just want to to play Crysis and that's it. :p
