guys I've been racking my brain with this for over a day, scoured countless other forums full of potential solutions that have all failed and I'm just out of ideas...

My dad's HDD crashed yesterday so I recovered what data I could and loaded the os (XP pro) onto a new hdd.

I installed office 03, etc.. everything I normally do. I've loaded about 5 or 6 machines for his office and all work fine. This one absolutely REFUSES to connect to their SMTP mail server at knology.

I spent an hour on the phone with knology yesterday and they verified that everything was fine.

We verified that the outlook pop3 and smtp server info was correct, password and user id are all right but when I try and test the settings, I get error messages saying it can't connect to the incoming mail POP3 server and cant connect to the outgoing SMTP server.

ports are set to the defaults (110 for pop and 25 for SMTP). the outgoing server settings is not supposed to have any info in there and everything I've checked matches up identically with several other machines in his office. In fact, I can setup any other computer in there with these settings and it fires right up and connects... so it's SOMETHING with the machine itself that I'm not seeing or I'm thinking maybe an update for office or windows itself that is causing this because none of the other computers are set to automatically update.

The specific error code he's getting is 0X80042108

I googled this and found countless people with this same problem.

I've tested the correct account and email settings on several machines here and all are getting the same error.

We've disabled windows firewall, we're not using a router, just straight to the cable modem, uninstalled any antivirus software, etc...

I mean.. we're totally stumped here. we can't ping smtp.knology.net either. it times out from every machine we've got. Can anyone ping them successfully?

office 03, office 07, outlook express, even thunderbird... we've checked to make sure there aren't any services that are stopped, there's no group policy objects preventing the connection. Only thing that I can think of is maybe some windows update did this? but a lot of those problems on google searches are years old and it was only 4 months ago that I loaded their newest machine.

Any ideas?

Update:

I found out from our network team that even our "unfiltered" internet connection has the smtp and pop3 ports blocked. I went to the library here on base that uses a commercial dsl connection and was able to ping it fine and setup an outlook account, send/recieve test mail, etc...

so it's SOMETHING up with his machine. The only thing different with his that I did was installed SP3 and office 07 rather than doing SP2 and then manually downloading the rest of the updates and installing office 03.
