Appeciate the news, but...

This is something creative should have done from the get-go instead of charging people 10 dollars. This is all pretty much damage control.

Been using the daniel_k cracked ALchemy drivers since their release, and they've been great. Not to mention that they're for ALL of Creative's cards instead of the ones restricted on the list. :)

Also, if you've paid money for the ALchemy drivers from Creative, they're offering full refunds for the purchase. Better hurry or else you'll miss out! :D

I didn't know they have been charging people for the Alchemy drivers! ... they expect people to go pay £60+ for a sound card then charge you extra for drivers? ... Ive never heard such a piss take rip-off in my life!

So what is it?
Its a wrapper that translates DirectSound API calls into OpenAL API calls.

LOL @ Alchemy driver.

Anyways it has always been free for X-Fi, now it's free for X-FI AND Audigy. I'm a little bummed, because I bought it for Beagles PC ages ago, but hey, it's only $10.

Heh, I was digging through some of the older games I have installed and I decided I'd try to fix up Deus Ex, Mobile Forces and Battlefield 1942 with proper hardware sound using ALchemy.

I'm sure I've done it (maybe even posted about it) before, but I just can't get over how good ALchemy works for some games. Deus Ex uses an old version of the unreal engine and never had proper surround sound. There was always a "dolby surround" option you could enable but it never seemed to be the right thing for any sound setup I had. It'd usually just try to simulate it (badly). It was probably just a limitation of DirectSound3D in 2000.

Using ALchemy though, it works perfectly. I install the ALchemy driver into the deusex\system folder with the default settings, turn on surround sound in the game and it works flawlessly. Its accurate and it isn't glitchy at all.

One more example of how well programmed Deus Ex was. Mobile Forces (same exact engine but 2 years newer) doesn't even have hardware sound support so it can't use ALchemy and the surround sound option is pretty much useless.

To use Pro Logic with the Unreal games you need a receiver that supports Pro Logic. Your 5500Z do, to use it you'd have to set your PC to 2.0 speaker and set your 5500Z to Pro Logic II movie mode. It works ok, but not as good as DirectSound's discreet 5.1 sound.

Bladerunner, now that game had good Pro Logic. ::D:

Wouldn't Dirt use OpenAL as it was so recent?
