Hey bud, what tool was that you used to test drives?

I had it installed a couple of years ago on a system but forgot what app it was.

Wow... is that just the speed of a single drive? Not RAID?

Mind to share wallpaper :drooling: ... and nice new HDDs I bought some weeks ago a new WD 500G Caviar SE16 and finally get 5.9 in WEi and is damn fast, Vista boots much faster and game loading times had reduced drasticly.

In defense of Seagate, the new 7200.11 series performs a lot better than the .10s. For comparison's sake, here's the HDTach score for my (three month old, and freshly reformatted) drive -

Still, that's a good deal shy of that new WD. I've been thinking of buying a new HDD too, since this array of (relatively) small drives is making more noise and sucking down more power than they're worth. Anyone here have an HDTach score for the new 1TB Samsung drives?

yes its a single drive, RAID right now would be to much work. don't feel like re-installing, setting up everything again

WD only has 1tb green power drive, which is special energy saving/quite drive that supposelly switches between 5400rpm and 7200rpm. I wanted a drive for esata enclosure. this way it generates less heat and less noise. It will be mostly used for back-up of TV shows from the media server. quick test yesterday it seems to have max speed of about 80mb/s

I don't have a single score because I wasn't thinking about it when I installed them. I was planning on RAID 0 from the start so here are 2 of them in an array.

I'm pretty sure they are using a 2 platter design. The less amount of platters the tighter the data is packed onto each one; which means that more data will pass the read/write head per spin. It also looks like they get some type of cache help at about 100GB because that spike is kind of in an odd place.

He didn't post any benchies for the 1TB drive as it won't matter once you put it into the enclosure. Those benchmarks are for the 640GB drives.

@Nekro: So what made you choose the WD640GBs over the 1TB sammys?

cost, those 640gb cost me 105 bucks each, sammy would cost me at least 200+ each.

plust 640gb WD is same speed as 1tb sammy. I might get raid set up one day, but not right now, it would consume to much time. Got the PC setup the way i want it right now.

not sure what you mean "it won't matter once you put it into enclosure" i have not tested the 1tb WD yet, but previously I had 500gb maxtor in that enclosure, and speed didn't differ compared to interior.

640gb WD is two 320gb platter design, simply denser the platter faster the speed

Yeah the seagate 7200.10 uses ~180gb platters, so that's why the 320Gb models were so fast when they came out.

I can't believe they doubled the density of platters in only 2 years.

well i will have my WD 1tbŽs in the case at first and probably raid my samsung 250gb disks for vistta and apps and use the tb disks as game and **** andstuff and so on
then i might use one as a Esata disk
