French boffins have come up with a hydrogen fuel cell which can be used a backup power source for mobile phones.

Boffins at the Atomic Energy Commission have created a fuel cell which is about the size of a cigarette lighter. The gadget is supposed to be carried in a belt pouch for those moments when you run out of power for the phone. The cartridges are being developed by the company Bic which makes pens, lighters and razors.

The idea is that it will be part of a "hybrid" system in which the phone first draws on the conventional battery for its power and then taps into the fuel cell if needed. The gas cartridge holds three to five recharges of the traditional battery.

The will be seen the shops by 2010.

Heard about fuel cell phones and there is a company in Canada also in this market. Personally, I'd be afraid they might explode! Another drawback is that you can't plug them in to recharge--you have to buy hydrogen fuel.
