A power surge blew up my TV, Stereo, VCR and most importantly MY COMPUTER. MY Logitechs 560 are also blown. The power company is gonna have to pay for everything, so what should I do? Should I order the gaming rig from Dell or should I just buy all the parts and build my own?

Does anyone know how this process works? How they decide how much money to give you?

they'll give you the least ammount of money they possibly can. They'll probably give you the ammount for the value of the items before they were destroyed, their value anyways. Don't expect to get back what you paid for these items;)

Do you know other people that had the same problem?
What was damaged in your computer? EVERYTHING? Or just PS? Motherboard? What about hard disk? Vital info in them??

I also suggest getting a surge protector in case it happens again:)

Yeah, messed up thing is that everything was on surge protectors. The TV and VCR were on a seperate one. My neighbor TV blew up too and it was also on a surge protector. So the power company screwed up. This is week is finals for me and I was working on a paper before all this happened, so I'm gonna see if its just the power supply thats blown.

Well, if you had surge protectors, most manufacturers of those products offer some kind of property loss prevention. I would go to the surge protector company to look for compensation as well.

If you actually get a dime back from the power company, consider yourself lucky. They are not obligated - technically - to replace what you lost, especially if the surge was "an act of God" (i.e. lightning bolt smokes a transformer, etc.) That's something insurance companies take care of...usually (if you get them on a nice day).

Personally, I keep 90% of all my stuff plugged into a surge protector. And not just any off-the-wall brand that K-Mart sells for $12, either. No, I end up forking over $30-$50 for just ONE surge protector alone but I make sure that sucker is backed up by a hefty guarantee - at least $10,000-$15,000. That way, if the surge protector fails to protect my gear from a spike that it should have, I'm going to be rolling in "Upgrade Time" dough!! And if the company wants to play hardball with their guarantee, I calmly remind the Claims Department Representative that I'm only one phone call away from "sicking my Jewish lawyers against their Jewish lawyers", as my Dad would put it! :D

"Sorry, sir, but your claim is being denied..."

"Ma'am, I have Sam Bernstein on speed-dial and nothing left to lose..."

Successfully got one claim approved that way about 10 years ago! :)

Granted, it was only for $3,000 but her supervisor must've been a math wiz!

lol, the lawyer thing is funny. It was definately their fault, it was a cloudless sky. Everybody that is on the same transformer had some kind of damage. So im hoping that im gonna get some upgrade dough.:D

bah, I'm using some cheap surge protectors and on my comp using some old one with a really short power supply. Got me through rolling black outs, surges, electrical probs with the crap wiring in my house, breakers everything, anybody ever heard of a brand called "INTEREX"?
