View Full Version : When will PC games have movie-quality sound?
Do you think Doom III will meet this level of sound quality with its Dolby Digital sound?
Depends how much time and effort the developers want to invest in the sound.
You still get games these days with no full time sound programmer, sound just tacked on the end n stuff.
Doom3 will take the sound up a notch with fully dolby digital. They also have trent reznor adding in foley sounds on alot of items, and more ambience that you can shake a stick at. It'll be pretty good, but not quite as good as a hollywood blockbuster will be.

Look around and you may give him more credit than that.
Here (http://www.geocities.com/doom3_central/), here (http://www.theninhotline.net/features/doom/doom.html), here (http://www.shugashack.com/onearticle.x/8355), or here (http://www.d3files.com/file.news?ID=3536).
Oh and I love this:
Trent provided the legendery "ambient" sound track (ie: a load of grunting noises) to the original Quake, but turned down the opportunity to provide music for Quake III for fear of "prostituting his talent".
He's a lot more talanted and capable than to do "foley sounds."
I know exactly what Trent has done on doom3. What I meant was in addition to all the usual stuff, there is extra sounds on pretty much everything in the game, giving an unprecedented level of immersion and ambience.
I am looking forward to doom3 for the sound as much as the graphics.
I am looking forward to doom3 for the sound as much as the graphics. Me too!
I'm an audiophile, and I love awesome sound! :D
Yeah, gonna hook me up with some nforce2 dolby goodness and a new set of 5.1 speakers for when that comes out. Think I'll book a week off work too!!
:D
Can the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 also decode Dolby Digital?
yeah it can decode it, but it cant encode it. nforce2 audio does do dolby encoding on the fly. So basically all your 3d sounds get turned into dolby digital.
You dont get that with audigy2.
