Wow, about time we see something new at the 10,000 RPM. Those older 36, 75, and 150 GB models were just too dang small.

Seems a bit hard to justify $300 for 300 gigs when you can get an extremely fast 640Gb drive for $100.

QFT. I've never been a fan of Raptors.

I have but I really only see it needed for the OS. data storage on good SATA 7200RPM drives are plenty fine for me.. especially considering how much storage space I can get with my $$.

Here is a good review of the VelociRaptor compared to other drives:
http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/Western_Digital_Velociraptor_300GB/?page=4

The WD 640Gb is currently the fastest 7200RPM drive on the market I think and its in that review.

The VelociRaptor definitely has some impressive numbers on some of the benches but its still hard to justify the terrible cost per GB.

Raptors are all about access times. This thing will make a killer OS drive. Not a lot of use as a storage drive though, as said. Storage drives are about read/write speeds.

Yea I will be sure to run out and not get one real soon. For anything to impress me enough to spend that kinda money it will need to be aSSD@ 300gb for $300

It looks tempting but it's not the best bang for your buck:(

150gb is too small for what? I am actually looking forward to the new velociraptor 150gb more than this 300gb version. Wouldn't you rather have a 150gb velociraptor plus a ~750gb storage drive over a 300gb velociraptor ?

I've had Raptor of some sort in the cart at Newegg so many times, but I still don't own one. Just too overpriced.

Same here. At the last second I always ditch it. Besides that, SSD's are the future... I'll wait for the price on them to come down.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the SSD?

Solid state drive. Sorta like a flash drive.

These Raptor drives can kiss my ass. I'm sick of them being so over priced.

Yeah that's right, I talk to hardware.

Sorry...saw them the minute Newegg posted em. My two 74 GB Raptors in RAID 0 were getting full...and I needed to upgrade...so I installed it yesterday...all is good. Excellent drive...in spite of the price. Here is HD Tach scores. The drive is actually faster than my older drives in RAID. This drive is in the SSD class as far as speed. SSD's are way way too expensive at this time.

Is the drive worth it? Well...to get close to this speed...you need TWO 640's in RAID to get within 20%. That is not necessarily a bad thing...

:headexplode: my 640gp get max speed of about 120+mb/s with average of 96mbmb/s

and i payed 105 bucks for 640gb. i will never see raptor drive being worth it, give it 6 months to a year and a new 7200rpm drive with higher density will overtake it again.

Even my "old" Seagate 7200.10 320Gb drive gets 80 max and 65 average. The only raid setup that a Raptor will beat is a pair of 5+ year old drives.

Nothing that SAS drives haven't been doing for years.

so here's a question...

If I wanted to build a new machine, would buying one of those sata 3 WD 650gig hdd's and splitting it into say a 100 gig partition for the C drive and the rest for D: storage, would the operating system still be as fast if the D partition was where all the actual data went?

I guess what I'm asking is if the WD drive split and managed like that be faster than a raptor and second hdd? becuase if it would, that would cut out a huge chunk of the budget. (as otherwise I'd be looking at the 300 gig Vraptor)
