View Full Version : Do you love Steam but suffer from...

HL2.exe has stopped working and will be closed every time you exit TF2 and Portal? Me too, and I'm tired of it. So first let me address a few comments that I know will be made...

1. This started when Valve converted Steam for a typical foreground application and had it run as a service. I think we all agree this is a good thing, I'm very happy with Steam as a service, but the root of the issue is that it runs under the Local Service account and it isn't set up correctly so UAC chokes when certain parts of Steam do their thing and then try to exit.

2. Yes, I know it doesn't appear to hurt anything and you just have to click a button, but that isn't the point. We also don't want to waste time with having to validate our installs or deal with potentional corrupted files, and none of us know what side effects this continuous crashing causes.

3. This also wreaks havoc with your Reliability & Performance Monitor score, and when I'm troubleshooting I would rather use that tool to help me identify and real error, not wade through results I know are bogus.

4. I opened a ticket with Valve and got back the horrid suggestion to add the Local Service account to Local Admins. Worst idea ever, take a look at your Services and you will more than half of them use that account. One of the many smart things that was done late in the Windows 2000 life cycle was to remove service accounts from that group by default, this is not something to take lightly and you shouldn't do it, and Valve should not recomend it. Note all those other services I mentioned don't have to be forcably closed all the time, this is a configuration issue that should be addressed.

5. There is some evidence that this isn't just a Vista issue, but it is happening to more people since XP SP3 shipped.

6. Yes, I am just this anal retentive about my logs and reliability scores.

So with that out of the way I implore anyone who suffers from this error to please take 10 minutes and open a ticket with Steam support; the more tickets raised the faster Valve will address this. And squashing this kind of bug does not mean that your favorite new feature will be neglected, that is not how large software dev houses work.

Please use this link (https://support.steampowered.com/login.php?)to find the support page log in.

And if you are even more lazy than I usually am, you can re-use my text...

The HL2.exe error has stopped error occurs on every exit ot Team Fortress 2 and Portal. Your Windows Vista Troubleshooting guide is out of date and all the "fixes" you recomend are incorporated into Vista SP1. Does Valve intend to officially investigate and resolve this issue? Even though it doens't prevent the games from being played a crash of any sort is never desirable. Thanks.

Thanks for humoring my OCD and need for spiffy clean Event Viewer logs.

Good thread, but I don't think Valve reads the forums and takes them as seriously as bug reports. I was hoping there was less apathy here compared to the Valve forums.

Most people are probably just too lazy to setup a steam support account.

True, but come on, I even provided the text for the support ticket.

Yes, HL2.EXE has stopped working is annoying. It does it for me in Vista x64 but also did the same thing in XP x64. Tell you the truth I can't help but think its an issue with OS's that can handle 4+ gigs of RAM and have 4+ gigs installed.

Would be nice to see a x64 version of HL2.EXE and the Steam client, but its just a minor annoyance and Steam/Hl2 games run great in Vista x64.

Ever since 2003 I have backed up and just copied over my Steam directory every time I reinstall windows or format. Therefore I have not done a proper install since then, but it always works flawlessly. Just run it again and it makes you log in once and you're done. Individual valve games lose their video settings but that's all. 3rd party games could have more serious issues but none of the ones I play.

I don't see why it would even install as a service unless it wants to keep updating even when you're not logged in, but I'd say just remove the service and run it manually.

It doesn't work that way, the actual Steam client is a service and as soon as you see that "Please wait while the Steam platform is updated" you are using the same version as the rest of us, look next time you start it.

Well my obtuse friend, besides the fact I already addressed this argument in the first post, a quick look around the web will show that after a period of time these crashes have strange implications. Like my friend Jason who shared your attitude but now about every 4th time this happens he has the re-validate his game files or TF2 stays stuck at Downloading 98% Complete.

So it the time you wasted trying to be witty you could have opened a ticket and helped, lol indeed:headexplode:

I understand that it auto updates, but my point is that it's not installed as a system service when running it the way I do. I leave it running all the time for game and platform updates, but it doesn't have to be running.

You are not understanding what I am saying, start Steam and go look in your services (not running processes), Steam is now a service.

I have found a potential fix but I need a couple people to test for me, PM me for details. I've loaded and played TF2, Portal and EP2 serveral times and rebooted serveral times without a crash, but I don't want to get other peoples hopes up until someone else tries. Thanks.

I'm interested. I think Valve might be interested as well!

steam support sucks ass.
I made a support ticket about a problem that thousends people are having and STILL are having. I showed them threads all over the internet and their own forum about the problem.
I even helped them by narrowing down the problem and know exactly what it is.

They said it was my pc that there was something wrong with. And then after some replayes they closed the ticket. God damn retards

Wrong.

I could see if newer versions of the Steam installer might install it as a service, but as I've said I have not "reinstalled" Steam in years. It clearly does not mind not being a service.

Hmm, are you running XP? Either way, I don't see Steam as a service being the issue, and it does default to manual and unloads cleanly.

How about running TF2 at 1920x1440, but your Windows desktop at 1280x1024 while running Dreamscene backgrounds on Vista... PUKE :headexplode: Your desktop will be all stretched out once you exit the game and you have to set your desktop to 1920x1440, then BACK to 1280x1024 and it's fine again. Talk about a PITA. I've opened a ticket with Steam but I don't have much hope :(

Steam is listed as a service on my machine running Vista x64. Its set to manual mode and it only starts when Steam is running and it shuts down when I close steam.
