Somebody else would have stepped up to the mark and taken on Intel instead. Or Intel may have been broken up as it would have become a monopoly.

Personally I think IBM\Motorola\Cyrix(VIA) would have moved into the market, at the moment there is no need for anymore players. The products on offer from Intel and AMD give the user nearly everything they require.

Without AMD to compete against Intel would not bother about improving their FP co-processors. They probably would not have even bothered to fix their FDIV bug. They'd just slack of and make money when they want to like Microsoft.

Prices would also be dictated by Intel, and maybe more people would see that Intel's 32 bit architecture is primative ape with plastic surgery compared to the 128 bit architecture of the Motorola chips.

AMD needs to do something about their chips getting so friggin hot.

A. If AMD weren't around somebody would've been there. Word is IBM is about to start making chips for x86 based on PPC designs.

B. Motorola's chips are not a 128-bit architecture. LOL. They are 32-bit, capable of 128-bit FPU calculations with AltiVec Instructions (Velocity Engine) and only on the G4's. Apple is actually about to cut Motorola loose because they aren't producing higher clock speeds. Of course, the PPC aliance is Apple, IBM, and Motorola. IBM invented PPC, and PPC 970 is gonna be bad:

900 Mhz FSB. (450x2=900)
.13u Process.
1.8 Ghz at the top end.
64-bit without AltiVec.
128-bit with AltiVec.
20+ Gflops with AltiVec per chip.

If only there were an x86 chip with this kind of power, but without the heat and unreliability of an Athlon.

C. Yes, the hammer does use a heat spreader, but they used a Ceramic packaging for it? O.o
I don't know why they wouldn't just use PCB like they should.

IBM is working with AMD to build the next big thing since sliced bread.......sometime in 2007- 2008. Maybe even 2009. They are developing EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography) microprocessors and should shrink down circuit features by a factor of 10 or so. Should be something great. :)

That's what I was wondering, the only problems Athlons ever had were VIA chipset related... and those are long gone.

I've run my Athlons for weeks on end with various OS's and had no problems, just used a good heatsink and fan, and the right power supply.

Aah, the old armageddon outa here scenario. Without AMD the three horseman of the apocalypso would have bongo'd us to death (Intel, MicroSoft, and Roman Polanski).

I see your vision, streets awash with hordes of terrified screaming mac owners, the great unwashed, dribbling like an eskimo's nose, towards certain mind destroying conformity. Three crashes a day keeps the doctor away, as me old ma used to say.

Imagine a future, very similar to the Terminator one, where Skynet was run on Intel processors and M$ windoze. Like that'd be a problem! The robots would still be running at 40MHz and their OS would crash when you tried to drag one window over another, besides they'd take so long booting up you'd have time to nick their batteries AND their hubcaps.

But still, *furtive glances at Intel machine of death*, it could still happen, and besides it probably has in some other reality somewhere...
