Having problems on new install of Suse 8.2 and 4363 drivers
I have :
athlon xp proc, MSI kt333 MB, geforce ti4600
when running the installer, everything runs fine, install is normal, checked install log, no errors
run sax2 and enable 3d support, click on 'test', get black screen (no output), cannot switch ctrl-alt-f2, have to reboot manually
X runs fine with nv driver, when nvidia driver is running this happens
only error in XF86Config.0.log is GLX extensions failed to load
I'm assuming this is an easy problem to fix, but can find no info on how to fix it
any help appreciated

Jesse

Actually the exact error is:
(EE) [GLX]: Failed to add GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)

if that helps

I have had problems with sax2 every time.

With SuSE 8.2 you can enable 3D and change your display resolution and color depth from the control panel.

Try to reinstall the drivers and skip sax2, reboot and use the control panel

No luck, control panel still calls sax2 when you change it there.
I don't think sax2 is the problem, though

The 4363 drivers worked fine for me on the ASUS A7N8X deluxe with a TNT2 M64 card.
I was running the stock SuSE 8.2 athlon kernel and simply followed the instructions for installing the 4363 driver.
First thing to check is whether the kernel module properly loaded. You can check this in /proc/driver/nvidia/status (IIRC).

the compiling through the nvidia installer tells me it made 2.4.20-4GB and my kernel (under suse 8.2) is 2.4.20-4GB-athlon. This doesn't make sense!

1. make sure that the kernel headers used for the driver compiling are the ones of the running kernel. In other words: under /usr/src/linux (default location) should be the sources of the kernel you are running.

2. *do not* download the precompiled drivers but build your own.

run "depmod -va | grep nvidia" after installation. if it doesn't display the module then the compilation has failed.

It sure doesn't. Why on earth did the installer try to compile the driver ? When I ran it, it simply installed a precompiled module (it seems nvidia has pre-compiled modules for all major distributions).
Are you running the stock SuSE athlon kernel or did you compile your own kernel ?

The kernel source supplied by suse is for the standard kernel, not the athlon one.

You need to make a small change before building the kernel module.

Edit the file

/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h

and amend the first line so that it reads

#define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.20-4GB-athlon"

none of this worked
changed the version.h file, checked depmod -va, nvidia was there, the /proc dir has no "nvidia" files ANYwhere

Decided to kill it and start over with Mandrake 9.1. That seemed to work fine. Guess I'll try suse another time when I actually have the CD of it.

Well, that's some good news after all. Since you've got the nvidia module compiled you only need to configure it properly (the XF86Config, /etc/modules.conf) then load it and you are set.
You might want to take a look at my configs - check out this thread for them:

didn't put in the option "dpms", but i don't think that's the problem i've got no idea where to go from here, any other suggestions?

post the current error from the logs.

Well, it seems that you have the nvidia module compiled, but not loaded.
As root try modprobe nvidia. What (if any) response do you get ?
After the modprobe command do a dmesg. It may output a lot, but only the last few lines are of interest (pay attention to anything with "agp", "gart", "nvidia" or "NVRM" in it).
Another diagnostic command is lsmod | grep nvidia to see if it got loaded ok.

Here's XF86 log

the nvidia module is getting loaded (and i've also tried manually loading it)
dmesg | grep produces none of the things you suggested, leibold

now i can get the x server up and running (with blank screen, of course) and i can hear kde come up, but trying to ctrl-alt-bkspace doesn't work like it should, ie it is back to the command line but doesn't release the screen, it's still blank
now at least i can ctrl-alt-del it instead of using reset button

In your XF86Config file, find the driver section for nvidia. Add a line

Option "NvAGP" "0"

as per the Nvidia readme, and try again. If that works then the problem is AGP related.

i had the same problem with suse 8.2 and a geforce4 mmx440. after installing the 4349 drivers, the screens turned black. i tried several suggestions, including the option to turn agp off. nothing worked until 4363 was released. i did not change anything except unistalling the new drivers, and now i got X and 3D acceleration working fine IF i load Suse in failsafe mode! does anyone know why this works in failsafe, but not with the normal kernel? where is the difference?

thx a lot!

Hi all,
I am using Suse from a few days (before i was redhat user) with GeForce 4 MX 440 with Nvidia TV-OUT chip.
I successfuly installed nvidia driver (1.0-4363) with original Suse 8.2 kernel.
chanching current runlevel to 3.
running nvidia installer.
running SaX2 and change device to use nvidia driver (not nv) and chage colors and resolution.

When i add (in Section device)
Optin "TwinView" "on"
Optin "Orientation" "Clone"
Option "MetaMode" "1024x768, 1024x768; 800x600, 800x600 ; 640x480, 640x480"
Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B"
Option "ConnetcedMonitor" "CRT, TV"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "50" // I'm not sure for this value but works on Redhat 8 & 9
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60" // I'm not sure for this value but works on Redhat 8 & 9

XServer tell me that is not available modes for TV-0

Driver NVidia 1.0-4363 is sertified for Suse 8.2 and i wish to see configuration files from tests on Suse 8.2

krtek, the main difference is that apci gets disabled in failsafe mode (a few other things as well, but apci=off seems to solve a number of issues).

goshoo, it sounds like your X server is complaining because none of the modelines in the XF86Config file match the specified resolutions and the vertical&horizontal refresh rates. If you still have the modelines you used with Redhat you should be able to simply add them to the XF86Config file in SuSE.

PROBLEM FIXED!!!!
I had another monitor attached to the dvi-port on the card, unattached it, ran sax2 and everything worked beautifully!
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

sax2 is a problem if you are running over 1280x1024. On my desktop machine the highest resolution it will work at is 1400x1050. On my notebook it gets me to 1600x1200 virtual desktop but the machine is really running at 800x600 ( yes, it has a 1600x1200 display ). If you have a working XF86Config, make sure you save it somewhere safe before upgrading your driver.

thx leibold!

so i do have to recompile my kernel, or just enter that at the boot prompt?
