CJ sent us a performance chart comparing Radeon HD 3870 X2 against the GeForce GTX 280 and GTX 260 on some of the games out there. Although, the benchmarks are done internally by Nvidia but it is probably conclusive to compare GTX 280 and GTX 260 here. The drivers for GeForce GTX 200 cards is the upcoming GeForce Release 177 while the drivers for 3870 X2 is a rather old Catalyst 8.3.

What the hell kind of scale is that?

It's been posted in the 4800 thread already. If it comes close (considering it's an Nvidia slide) Nvidia will be getting my money...

It's all measured in terms of the 3870x2... a 2.0 on the scale = twice the fps of the 3870x2?

yap, you are correct

I meant how the 2.0 was like 5x higher than the 1.0, rather than being twice as high.
It just makes the graph look like PR crap.
Awesome results if true though.
I haven't gone the SLI route in quite awhile..... 2 of these could be interesting :D

CJ from B3D has this to say today:
The X4100 number for the GTX 280 was correct with the drivers at the time. Seems that NV was able to push it to X4800 with the latest drivers.
This is in Futuremark Vantage, so GTX 280 = X4800.
He also says this:
But here's what you all wanted to hear.... According to the same source R700 scores about X5500> in Vantage.
So R700 = X5500.
R700 @ X5500 vs GTX 280 @ X4800 = R700 is 15% faster than GTX 280.

In Vantage. That we all know is not exactly the most true life representation of games experience
Plus, we are talking a dual card x a single card.

Your point? R700 is the competitor to the GTX 280, so I think the comparison is sound.

See, this is why I was complaining about the graph:

Yeah but ATI cards score also better 3DMark06 points but are slower in games... Let's wait and see.
But if I have to choose between a single GPU card and a dual GPU card I'll take the single GPU card.

But its not 3dmark06? Its Vantage. ;)
Look at how ****ty ATI drivers are for the 3870x2 and tell me you're excited about that 4870x2. ;)
Hell I hate SLI at this point much less that mess of **** they call crossfire.

Its hard for me to rag on sh*tty ATI driver when I've had a nvidia driver BSOD over a dozen times now, from an issue thats 6 months old and hasnt been fixed.

My point is that both IHV'S are releasing (and in here is more people that should respect and NDA) info that at this moment can not be substantiated, based on a benchmark that has 0 impact on real life performance
The NV graph is marketing fud for internal sales. Same as the ATI numbers
We do not know what system, settings, etc was used
And we all know that some apps can be more "optimized" than others.....
i think x4800 points in vantage seems low i score x3100 whit my 8800 Ultra @750/1944/2500and Q6600 @ 3.7GHz

I know. I'm just saying that 3DMark scores, 06 and Vantage, aren't good indicators for real world performance IMO.

Soon, we will get some independent numbers, and just like a year ago; the reviewers will be tripping over themselves to post new benches.
Its not like there will be any real availability far a while anyway.
right now, I'm in no hurry. My 8800GTX OC, handles everything I can throw at it. There is nothing on the near horizon (that I care about) that needs more power than I have right now.
Of course things will change in the future. FarCry2 ?? Stalker 2?? Time will tell.
currently, I plan to pass this release and wait till the Q1 refreshes.
That doesn't mean I won't watch and read up.
Maybe, IF, there is a justification. Right now its too early.
And then the drivers need to stabilize anyway.
